Biography Louis Somer

Louis Somer was born in Assen on May 13, 1901 and died on August 6, 1966.


Education

He received his first violin lessons from E. Clemens Schröner and continued his study at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music, violin with Alexander Schmuller and Harmony with Bernard Zweers. A state scholarship allowed him to finish his studies with Bram Eldering in Köln, Germany, and Lucien Capet in Paris, France.


Activities

From 1925 to 1927 Louis Somer was concertmaster with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1930 to 1933 he was concertmaster of the KRO Radio Orchestra in Hilversum. From 1946 to 1959 he was concertmaster of the Groningen symphony orchestra. As a soloist he played with many Dutch orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He introduced Dutch music in Paris. He also performed chamber music with outstanding soloists such as Gerard Hengeveld and George van Renesse. He also taught at the Groningen Conservatorium.


Compositions

As a composer Louis Somer was mostly self-taught. Somers orchestral works include Passacaglia en fuga (1941), Divertimento concertante, Burlesque for piano and orchestra (1952) and a Violin Concerto (1951). He also composed for chamber music ensembles: string quartets, a piano trio and sonatinas.


Prizes

In 1953 Louis Somer was awarded the Cultural Prize of the Province of Groningen for the composition Novemberland for recitation and string quartet.
