Biography Legowelt

Legowelt is producer Danny Wolfers from The Hague. He makes electro-disco combined with soulful house and jazzy techno-funk, released by labels like Bunker and Crème Organization. He is also active under the pseudonyms Danny Blanco, Franz Falckenhaus, Gladio, Klaus Weltman, Polarius, Raheem Hershel, Salamandos, Smackos, Squadra Blanco and Venom 18.

1996 - 2008

In the early nineties Danny Wolfers starts making music, inspired by his heroes from Detroit and Chicago, including Underground Resistance, Model 500, Blake Baxter, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Armando Gallop and Mr. Fingers. Later sources of inspiration are the experimental sounds of Mu-Ziq, Aphex Twin, Drexciya and acts on The Irdial Discs. The techno and electro scene in his hometown The Hague is also a source of inspiration, especially Unit Moebius' sparse electro. Through townsmen I-f (Ferenc van der Sluijs) and Melvin White (Pim Koppers) Wolfers is introduced to early electro and obscure Italo disco. Following the cassette Space Force (1996) Legowelt starts releasing recordings on Bunker, Unit Moebius' label from The Hague, in 1998. The single Disco Rout on Cocoon Recordings is a major club hit in Germany in 2002. Legowelt also records with Orgue Electronique (Brian Schijf). Together they produce remixes for others, perform as a duo and release records for Viewlexx and Down Low Music under the name Macho Cat Garage. Legowelt also forms a DJ team with Jeroen van der Star (DJ TLR), Crème Organization's founder, and with Bunker's Guy Tavares (aka DJ Schmerzlabor). The producer makes a soundtrack for the Dutch film Elefanten Boots (2006) and a score for a film about the mythical Dune Man. Both films are so obscure they are absent from the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com). In August 2007 Legowelt is part of the 303 All Stars, an 'orchestra' of Dutch techno pioneers, featuring Legowelt, Rude 66, Acid Junkies and Nederzuur. At the Lowlands festival they perform a set of acid with a couple of linked analog Roland drum machines: five 303's, one 808 and one 909. Under the name Phalangius Legowelt records the album The Cambridge Library Murders (2007), using a Roland Juno 6 synthesizer. For the electro CD Embrace The Loneliness Legowelt takes on the name Twilight Moose. September 2008 sees the release of the fourteen track album The Rise And Fall Of Manuel Noriega. The same label, Strange Life Records, releases his soundtrack for the film Shadow Horizon two months later.

2009

Dark Days 2 is the sequel to the 2004 Dark Days and contains Detroit techno influenced, obscure recordings from dug-up cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes and DAT-tapes. Under the name Nacho Patrol Legowelt releases the EP Futuristic Abbeba, featuring spacey dance, mixing Afro-funk with house rhythms. Vatos Locos is a double 12" with electro-techno, according to Legowelt's website conceived by the autistic Vato, tied to a wheelchair in the basement of an Echo Park car salesman in 1985. For the double 12” FC Den Haag (on Dumb Terminal Records) Legowelt uses the alias of a group called Dickie Smabers & The Moerwijk Crew. The four tracks on the Slompy Jitt EP (released in May by Delsin) refer to classical Chicago house and Detroit techno, in turns in a playful and a reflective manner. On the album Amiga Railroad Adventures (July) the sequencer, a TR808 and the Korg synthesizer are controlled by an Amiga 1200 computer.
