Kyteman is trumpeter Colin Benders from the Utrecht district of Overvecht. In 2009 he creates quite a stir in the club circuit and at festivals with his hiphop orchestra. He is awarded the 2009 Popprijs (the major Dutch pop music award) for his achievements.

Biography Kyteman

Kyteman is trumpeter Colin Benders from the Utrecht district of Overvecht. In 2009 he creates quite a stir in the club circuit and at festivals with his hiphop orchestra. He is awarded the 2009 Popprijs (the major Dutch pop music award) for his achievements.

1978 - 2008

Kyteman (Utrecht, 1987) plays in various bands, including Relax, and guests with Krezip, Voicst and C-Mon & Kypski. At the age of 18 he starts work on a solo album.

2009

The Hermit Sessions is released in the spring. Kyteman performs his music live with a hiphop orchestra featuring at least twelve musicians and eight MCs. In January he appears at the Groningen Noorderslag festival. The orchestra consist of drummer Bram Hakkens, percussionists Claus Tofft and Frank Wienk, keyboard players Eelco Topper and Niels Broos and bassist Dibbe van Laarhoven, plus the horns of Randell Heye (trumpet), Kobi Arditi (trombone) and Morris Kliphuis (French horn) and the Red Limo String Quartet, consisting of violinists Sietse van Gorkom and Camilla van der Kooij, cellist Jonas Pap and violist Rani Kumar. The eight rapping MCs are Reazun, King Jule, Soulay, Unorthadox, Pax, GMB, Double G and Master Surreal. The hiphop orchestra gets ample media attention, and is featured at festivals like The Hague Jazz and Pinkpop, and is support act to singer Anouk at the Amsterdam Westerpark. For the project In A Cabin With Kyteman and composer/French hornist Morris Kliphuis travel to Thailand in July for recording sessions, including one with the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. A film about the trip is aired by the NPS on the Nederland 3 Tv channel on 3 October. When the concert at the Amsterdam Heineken Music Hall on 12 december sells out within two weeks, Kyteman and his orchestra give extra performances in November at the Tilburg 013 and at the Utrecht Tivoli. Having sold over 25,000 sopies The Hermit Sessions achieves the golden disc status. Listeners of the 3FM radio show 3voor12 vote the song Sorry by Kyteman's Hiphop Orchestra as their 2009 Song of the Year in an internet poll.

2010

At the Noorderslag festival at the Groningen Oosterpoort in January Kyteman is awarded the 2009 Popprijs. The jury is united in its judgment, and values the Hiphop Orchestra for its 'authenticity, source of inspiration and idiosyncrasy'. Following the award ceremony at the Oosterpoort Grote Zaal the large ensemble performs once again. At the award ceremony for the 3FM Awards in April Kyteman's Hiphop Orchestra is the victor in the category Best Live Act of 2009. In May The Hermit Sessions has sold over 50,000 and the album officially goes platinum. After a few months of radio silence Kyteman's Hiphop Orchestra performs again. In July they play the Rock Werchter festival in Belgium and Umbria Jazz in Italy, and in September they give concerts in Aachen and Brussels. On 3 October Kyteman is awarded an Edison (Dutch Grammy) for The Hermit Sessions in the category Best Group. During the fifth edition of Symphonica in Rosso, at the Arnhem Gelredome stadium on 16 and 16 October, headliner Sting is accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra conducted by Steven Mercurio. Kyteman is a guest artist at this event.
