Biography Kraak & Smaak

Kraak & Smaak is a producer trio from Leiden, consisting of Mark Kneppers (who doubles as DJ Knuppelhout and as one half - DJ Pim - of renowned DJ duo Wipneus & Pim), classically trained Oscar de Jong and Wim Plug. They like to describe their mix of electronic funk, samples and breakbeats as 'future funk.' Abroad the band name is pronounced as controversial Crack & Smack.

2003 - 2004

Classically trained Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers (a.k.a. DJ Knuppelhout, DJ Pim of Wipneus & Pim and as the owner of Leiden-based record store VelvetMusic) and sociologist Wim Plug sample relentlessly from old vinyl records. The end product - catchy and funky dance tracks - they send to a number of labels, including the UK's Jalapeno Records, which snatches them up happily. The track Money In The Bag is picked up by BBC Radio 1's Annie Nightingale. Their fourth EP Say Yeah becomes a hit in the DMC Buzz Chart, The UK Cool Cuts Chart and the Ministry Of Sound's Vital Vinyl Chart. Kraak & Smaak remixes OLaBOLA, Mark Rae, Karl Moestl and Max Sedgley. Apart from funky breakbeat the trio also spins house, electro and hiphop a tits DJ-sets. They have a fixed club night in Tilburg's 013.

2005

Kraak & Smaak The album Boogie Angst features contributions by U-Gene, Ro Krom (OLaBOLA) and singer Dez. The record is previewed by the June-released single Money In The Bag. Enhanced by bassist Marc Baronner (Mimezine) and rapper/percussionist Ro Krom, Kraak & Smaak becomes a live band too. The band, which plays on the annual Uitmarkt (the market place that previews the highlights out of the upcoming theatre and club season) embarks on an Australian tour in November. Kraak & Smaak also provides remixes of the track Can't Get Enough by Mimezine and Seven Days by Jamiroquai, which is released world wide by Sony/BMG as a single and 12". Another Jamiroquai single Electric Mistress also contains a remix by Kraak & Smaak. The single One Of These Days is remixed by Balearic Soul, Fort Knox Five and Mark Rae. It is dance Single Of The Week on the BBC. Linda Bloemhardt (ex-Mendoza Dance Parti a.o.) replaces singer Dez. The band plays at the Amsterdam Dance Event and in a packed The Cargo in London. Kraak & Smaak also plays shows in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Australia. The band wins an Essent Award.

2006

Kraak & Smaak On January 21 at Amsterdam's Panama club Kraak & Smaak present their new EP Keep Me Home/Real Pain, featuring remixes by Gregor Salto and 4Hero among others. Kraak & Smaak sign a deal with PIAS. The label re-releases Boogie Angst with a remix bonus CD. Single Keep Me Home comes out in March. The tracks Say Yeah, Jolie Banane and Hello Big Mama are featured on the film Ik Omhels Je Met Duizend Armen ('I Embrace You With A Thousand Arms'), supplemented by a couple of extra tracks, especially written for the film. In May Quango Recs (of Kruder & Dorfmeister-fame) releases the album Boogie Angst in the US. In June the band plays at the Pinkpop festival.

2007

Kraak & Smaak In March Kraak & Smaak travels to the US for a tour and a show at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. Later April Kraak & Smaak play the Coachella festival in LA. The Remix Sessions (May) is a collection of remixes by Kraak & Smaak for the likes of Richard Dorfmeister, Jamiroquai, Mark Rae, Max Sedgley and Fort Knox Five. In September Kraak & Smaak is support act for UK band Faithless twice: 19 September at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp and 21 September at the Gelredome in Arnhem. During the band's autumn tour with support act MeloManics, Kraak & Smaak plays several songs of their new album which is scheduled for release in the spring of 2008. On stage the band is joined by guitarist Paul Jan Bakker. Preceding the band's new album is the 12'' inch Funk Ass Rotator/Mad As Hell (26 November).

2008

Album Plastic People is released in April and features collaborations with Mark Brydon (Moloko), rapper Dudley Perkins (in the song That's My Word) and vocalist Yerry Rellum (a.k.a. Caprice). First single Squeeze Me features vocals by British soul singer Ben Westbeech. The single and accompanying video are discovered by US blogger Perez Hilton and used in episode 816 of the popular US TV show CSI. Ine June, Ro Krom leaves Kraak & Smaak to be able to fully concentrate on writing new material, drumming, remixing and other musical challenges. He is replaced by André Kemp. The single Plastic People includes remixes by the likes of Deetron, Prok & Fitch and All Good Funk Alliance.

2009

In January, the album Boogie Angst from 2005 gets a European Border Breaker Award 2009. The award is presented by the European Committee and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to artists that have been successful with their debut album in Europe, outside their own country. Kraak & Smaak is invited by South By Southwest to perform at this showcase festival, late March in Austin, Texas. Kraak & Smaak is responsible for the beats on the single Headlines by Dutch singer Dennis.
