Biography Kim Bowman

1957

Kim Bowman was born in Margaret River (Australia) on October 4, 1957.

Education

He had his education mainly in the Netherlands, where he started art school in Den Bosch at the age of 17. He made art installations and environments and exhibitions of large books and 'experience machines'. His art works have been purchased and commissioned by museums, private art collectors and the Dutch Government.
A few immature compositions date from those years. Meanwhile he played guitars and drums in several Punk bands. During and after art school he made a range of musical instruments which he used in tape compositions and gradually started writing music. At that time he was studying cello and percussion as well. In 1985 Bowman enrolled at the Utrecht Conservatorium of Music at the composition department and studied with David Porcelijn. He continued his studies in 1987 at the Rotterdam Conservatorium of Music with Klaas de Vries and undertook minor studies in double bass and piano as well and he graduated in 1993. Kim Bowman is living in Sydney, Australia since January 2005.

Compositions

Writing for a larger group of instruments has his particular interest. His compositions are generally very dense and hectic; all instruments are treated like a flock of birds or a shoal of fish. It trips over itself, deranges and proceeds like a tidal wave. For various pieces Bowman has designed additional instruments; for instance in Black Wind he designed footslaps, to be played by all string players. His works have been performed throughout the world (the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Japan, U.S.A., Hungary, Australia, Korea, Mexico and Czech Republic) and commissioned and performed by major orchestras and ensembles like the Residentie Okest (The Hague), Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Holland Sinfonia, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Meridian Arts Ensemble New York. Reinbert de Leeuw, David Porcelijn, Etienne Siebens, Lucas Vis and Jac van Steen amongst others have conducted his works. Recent compositions tend to incorporate other art disciplines either by collaborating with other artists, or by engaging theatrical or visual elements. In Sydney Bowman took on designing sound sculptures and musical instruments for playgrounds and public areas since early 2008, thus creating a bridge to his earlier training and life as a visual artist.

Prizes

Entity for flute quartet was awarded with a honourable mention in the USA by the National Flute Association (1998). Alchemia I for orchestra was selected by the National Score Reading Panel of Symphony Australia in 1998 for performance in the 2000-season.
