Biography Juan Felipe Waller

1971

Juan Felipe Waller was born on March 30, 1971 in Mexico City from a Dutch father and a Mexican mother.

Education

After studying at the Academie des Arts Plastiques in Paris (1990), he continued his education in Mexico at the Music Study and Investigation Centre (CIEM). From 1994 to 1999 he studied composition at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music with Klaas de Vries and Peter-Jan Wagemans, and electro-acoustic music with René Uylenhoet. He attended master classes by Berio, Tiensuu, Stachowski, Donatoni, Bujarski and Brophy.

Activities

Waller worked with the choreographer Christina Gehrig Binder (Coeur du Savon, Chimera) and with the animation filmmaker Martha Colburn (Secrets of Mexuality). Then he started to experiment with Super8 animations: Hot Gunpowder, a cowgirl story, Teguala II, music for 120 ceramic tiles and video, Killing Silver with live music played by The Warlips and Loretta's Room with artists' collective MorphoDidius.

Compositions

His works have been performed in Mexico, Bulgaria and The Netherlands: Eye Masking during the Gaudeamus Week 1997 (Doelen Ensemble), Blow - a multimedia project with film director Frank Scheffers and ASKO Ensemble - in April 1998, and Teguala, a piece for ceramic tiles and tape performed by Percussive Rotterdam (May 1998). In some of his works, such as El Culto for four singers and large ensemble, and En el Allure del Frenesi, there is an evident influence of Mexican instrumentation, colour and style, whilst in other pieces such as Jeu de Dames and Eye Masking the musical source emerges from a darker and psychological inspiration. In both cases surrealism plays an important role.

Awards

In 1999 he was awarded the NOG Jonge Componistenprijs for Calumnia.
