Biography Joke Brandsma

Joke Brandsma was born on September 29, 1959 in Heerenveen.


Education

She studied organ in Leeuwarden with Anco Ezinga and continued her organ study at the conservatory in Arnhem with Hans van Nieuwkoop. As of 1985 she studied at the Dutch carillon school. She also studied choral conducting at the Institute for Church Music in Utrecht.


Activities

Joke Brandsma is cantor-organist at the Reformed Church in Arnhem and gives carillon concerts during the summer months. She collaborated on the Organ book of 491 songs (Book Centre, The Hague 1985).


Compositions

Joke Brandsma composed among others Miserere mihi (1979) and Lutum fecit (1985), two motets on Gregorian themes for a cappella choir; choral motet Nun komm der Heiden Heiland, for choir and oboe (1979/88); The Yusuf Flower, for soprano and harpsichord (1987), a Persian quatrain in an English translation by E.H. Whinfield, and The Rhythm of Mother Earth, variations for carillon (1988).


Prizes

Joke Brandsma won the second prize at the organ competition for early music at Zeerijp (Groningen) in 1981 and in June 1987 she was awarded the first prize at the carillon contest in Eindhoven.
