Johan plays at the Noorderslag festival and at Pinkpop. The band signs a contract with the American Spin-Art label and goes on a short tour through the States where they perform at the CMJ-festival in New York.
In February the Universal Music Group releases Johan's debut album in Scandinavia and Germany. In March Johan again travels to the U.S. when their first album is re-released on Sire Records. In the autumn they begin recordings for their second album. In October and November De Wit and Krull leave the band and De Greeuw suffers from depression.
The remaining band members go into the studio together with singer David Corel and Diederik Nomden (guitar/keyboard/singer), both from Redivider, and Diets Dijkstra (guitar).
Johan spends most of its time in the studio. In August they play their first gig in almost two years.
In February and March Johan plays some try-out gigs in The Netherlands. Their new album Pergola is released in April. After a gig in the Melkweg and several try-outs shows, the Pergola-tour kicks off in Utrecht. Johan replaces British dance-act Orbital at Pinkpop festival and some weeks later the band plays at the Parkpop festival. In August the band plays a great gig at Lowlands festival. The American tour is cancelled due to the attacks of September 11. Listeners to pubcaster VPRO vote the track Tumble And Fall 'song of the year.'
Johan wins an Edison Award in the category Best group national for the album Pergola. Also, the band is selected for the next promotion campaign in Germany under the musicXport.nl umbrella.
Kwakman and Nomden play on Nu, the debut album by Dutch language singer-songwriter Carmona.
Wim Kwakman and Diederik Nomden quit the band in order to concentrate on other projects. By the end of September the band plays at Utrecht's Ekko club with Jeroen Kleijn on drums.
The third album Thx Jhn is again recorded and produced by Hagenaars. On May 22 it comes out on both CD and vinyl.
In January Johan plays at the Noorderslag conference/festival in Groningen. In February the band plays two support slots for US band the Mooney Suzuki at the Rebel Club in New York. Maarten Kooijman contributes to the album Four-letter Word by GRAM. In December, Excelsior Recordings hosts Fine Fine Music, a club night in ten clubs across the country with as headlining act an acoustic set by Johan.
The box 12.5 Years, 3 Albums, 36 Songs includes the three Johan in remastered version and a DVD with seven videos. After several try-out shows Johan kicks off a spring theatre tour featuring old material in special arrangements and new material from the upcoming fourth album. The second part of the year features many gigs, including shows at summer festivals like Dijkpop and a show in Vondelpark in Amsterdam. Other festivals include Oerol and the first edition of Into The Great Wide Open. It will be the band's final tour. After 13 years and four albums the band says goodbye to their fans. 'In a funny way it feels right, to stop at this moment', frontman Jacob de Greeuw says in a press statement. During their final show in a sold out Paradiso, Amsterdam, Johan receives a golden record for the 2001 album Pergola.
