Biography Jeffrey Bruinsma

Jeffrey Bruinsma (The Hague, 30 April 1977) is a leading violinist in Dutch jazz. He performs mostly with his own Bruinsma Syndicaat, which plays original compositions exclusively, in a hybrid style comprising pop music, funk, oriental music, classical music and jazz. He often makes use of effects pedals, arming himself against the volume of brass and percussion in most jazz formations.

2002

Bruinsma graduates cum laude from the Amsterdam conservatory, majoring in jazz violin. He forms the Bruinsma Syndicaat, a playful reference to the notorious Dutch criminal mastermind Klaas Bruinsma. The band performs in differing line-ups. The acoustic Bruinsma Syndicaat plays impressionistic chamber music with a funky edge and mentions composers like Claude Debussy, Curtis Mayfield, Wayne Shorter and Alban Berg as sources of inspiration. The electric Bruinsma Syndicaat takes its inspiration from the early jazz-rock of bands like Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Miles Davis's electric formations. For this incarnation Bruinsma takes along a battery of effect pedals. In both versions the Bruinsma Syndicaat plays original compositions by the band leader exclusively.

2005

The Rotterdam Scapino Ballet commissions Bruinsma to compose music for the production Paramount by choreographer Ed Wubbe. He also leads the international ensemble which tours with the ballet troupe, and performs at the Tel Aviv Opera, and other places.

2006

Jeffrey Bruinsma wins the Deloitte Jazz Award (an award for young jazz talent) at the Amsterdam Bimhuis. The jury calls him a very communicative and creative musician and praises his well-structured solos, his passionate performance and communicative playing, his art of making the violin swing, and his talent as a composer. He is invited to do a guest performance at the award show for the Concertgebouw Jazz Award at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The laureate for that year is pianist, composer and arranger Eddie Palmieri.

2007

Bruinsma, choreographer David Middendorp and double bassist Brice Soniano create the production Basluik. Stella Den Haag commissions the same trio to create a production on the theme of shadow and light: Schuilnaam Schaduw. Bruinsma starts teaching jazz violin at the Amsterdam conservatory.

2008

Bruinsma's first CD is released, entitled Area 51, named after the top secret American military base in the Nevada desert, north of Las Vegas. The album is recorded live in the Robeco Jazzcafé at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with his group Bruinsma Syndicaat, consisting of Jesse van Ruller, Gulli Gudmundsson, Martijn Vink and Afra Mussawisade. The record receives favorable reviews. 'These live recordings demonstrate his melodic imagination, fluent, expressive phrasing and strong timing in exceptionally attractive compositions with an almost pop-like catchiness,' writes jazz critic Frank van Herk in De Volkskrant. Choreographer David Middendorp and Bruinsma also start a foundation named Area 51. The foundation creates the multi-media dance production After Dark for the traveling theater festival Parade.

2009

Area 51 produces Mr Hands, another production which combines music, dance and animation.
