Biography Jarmo Hoogendijk
At the age of six Jarmo Hoogendijk (Den Helder, 28 March 1965) hears a Louis Armstrong record, and he is sold on it. In the second half of the eighties he gains fame with the Ben van den Dungen/Jarmo Hoogendijk Quintet, the first remarkable group to have sprung from the jazz courses at the Dutch conservatories. In the nineties he develops into one of Europe's most expressive and jazz trumpeters. This shows from his CD recordings, his performances with many all star groups, and his gigs with famous foreign musicians. It makes it all the more tragic that he has been unable to play since 2004. Surgery with bad aftercare, leading to a dysfunction of several facial muscles, is the cause of a hitherto irreparable damage to his embouchure.

1975 - 1982
As a nine-year-old he starts taking trumpet lessons at the local music school. As a member of the Helders Kamerorkest (chamber orchestra) and the Winnubst brass band he gains practical experience playing in ensembles. In high school he teaches himself to improvise by playing along with records. In 1982 he has his first paid gigs with The Husband and Exotica Tropical, both regional bands.
1983
He studies the trumpet at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. His trumpet teacher is Ack van Rooyen. He also takes courses with Beatrijs Korevaar and Frans Elsen.
1984 - 1985
Pianist Jan Laurens Hartong takes him on board his Cubop ensemble Nueva Manteca. With this band, of which he will remain a member until 2004, Jarmo Hoogendijk records nine CDs, and he tours both at home and abroad (not just in Europe, but also the US, Canada and Puerto Rico). During one of these tours he plays alongside the famous Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi. He is also the co-founder of the Ben van den Dungen/Jarmo Hoogendijk Quintet. At the 1985 NOS Meervaart Jazz Competition this group wins first prize. Jarmo Hoogendijk's brilliant trumpet playing 'makes his instrument shout with joy', says magazine Jazz Nu. The quintet develops into one of the foremost European hard-bop bands. Tours in The Netherlands, Europe, the US and Canada soon follow. The band documents its energetic music on five CDs.
1986
Jarmo Hoogendijk is awarded the Pall Mall Export Award, presented to him at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The Dutch big bands are in dire need for good trumpet soloists. This is why both the Dutch Jazz Orchestra (led by Jerry van Rooyen) and Henk Meutgeert's Netherlands Concert Jazz Band ask him to join. Jarmo Hoogendijk plays in both bands for a number of years, until 1990 and 1991 respectively. He also regularly replaces Ack van Rooyen in the Skymasters (a radio big band) in the years 1986-'88. 1986 also sees the start of his association with pianist-promoter Rein de Graaff. He plays in the Rein de Graaff Sextet, an extension of his regular quartet with a trumpet and a trombone. Jarmo Hoogendijk also regularly shares the front line with the legendary American soloists De Graaff invites to come to Europe. As such he plays with tenorist Teddy Edwards and the altoists Frank Morgan and Charles McPherson.
1987
Jarmo Hoogendijk plays in a memorable TV performance with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard.
1988
A US tour with the Skymasters makes a deep impression, as does his first personal contact with his idol Woody Shaw. Because Shaw frequently operates in the Netherlands in the eighties, Hoogendijk gets to spend a great deal of time with him. He even takes some lessons from him. Woody Shaw recognizes his Dutch colleague's talent, which goes to show from an announcement in the spring of 1988, at the Haarlem Jazz Club, where he features Jarmo Hoogendijk in a few pieces: '...he plays like he is in his character – a gentleman – but dangerous on the trumpet. You all should be very proud of him.'
1990
Jarmo Hoogendijk starts teaching at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at the Codarts/Rotterdam Jazz Academy. Rik Mol, David Rockefeller and Michael Varekamp are some of his students.
1991
He becomes a member of the European Jazz Ensemble and the European Trumpet Summit, with which he performs at European festivals, and records a number of CDs. Especially the latter group makes for a welcome change from the quintet he leads with his buddy Ben van den Dungen. In it he has colleagues Allan Botschinsky, Enrico Rava and Thomas Heberer by his side.
1995
The NPS television documentary series Het Uur van de Wolf airs a film entitled Het Gegeven Ben en Jarmo (the Ben and Jarmo factor), about the jazz lives of Ben van den Dungen and Jarmo Hoogendijk.
1996
The Ben van de Dungen/Jarmo Hoogendijk Quintet tours with drummer Cindy Blackman. Since she is well-known as guitarist-singer Lenny Kravitz's drummer, it's easy to book a two week tour for two consecutive years (1996 and 1997). When Latin percussionist Lucas van Merwijk forms his Cubop City Big Band, Jarmo Hoogendijk is one of the trumpeters.
1997
Pianist Louis van Dijk starts his Superband, to play contemporary versions of the music of important musicians and genres from jazz history. The sextet consists of Bart van Lier on trombone, Jarmo Hoogendijk on trumpet, Ben van den Dungen on saxophone, Louis van Dijk on piano, Harry Emmery on bass and John Engels on drums. Over the years they take on the music of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, and in the early 2000s they have their way with mainstays from the swing era. The Superband's core is in fact Hoogendijk and Van den Dungen's quintet, which also organizes the tours through its booking bureau. Jarmo Hoogendijk also becomes a member of the Amina Figarova Group, the Wolfert Brederode/Eric Ineke Quintet and the Latin Jazz Quintet Bye-Ya. In 2000 he is chosen to perform as a soloist with the Helsinki Radio Symphony Orchestra in an EBU radio broadcast.
2002 - 2004
During a Latin session in New York in 2002 he damages his embouchure, which later turns out to be disastrous. In 2003 he makes his last recording with Bye-Ya, his last tour with Nueva Manteca, and yet another tour with singer Rita Reys and the Beets Brothers. In 2004 Jarmo ends his very successful career as a jazz musician because of the damage done to his embouchure and the trouble with his facial muscles. Fortunately these problems do not affect his teaching. Aspiring trumpeters still have a lot to gain from his experience.
During his career Jarmo Hoogendijk performed with Jimmy Heath, J.J. Johnson, Art Taylor, Junior Cook and Mal Waldron. At the North Sea Jazz Festival he played in trumpet summits featuring Clark Terry, Benny Bailey, Lew Soloff and the Candoli Brothers, as well as Philip Harper, John Marshall, Gerard Presencer and Dusko Goykovic.
