Biography Jan-Bas Bollen

Jan-Bas Bollen was born in Amsterdam in 1961.

Musical education
His preliminary education began with studying the violin with Jan Bor from 1967 till 1972, and at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Herman Krebbers and Jeannelotte Hertzberger from 1972 till 1979. He studied composition with Joep Straesser in Utrecht and composition and electronic music with Theo Loevendie, Gilius van Bergeijk and Klaas de Vries at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He has attended many international courses and festivals, including the Kazimierz Dolny in Poland, 1995, where he attended a Karnatic percussion workshop taught by S. Mani. He has also attended the 3rd and 4th International Music Forums in Kiev, Ukraine as guest composer and artistic director of Ensemble HEX (1995-1996) and the Sweelinck Conservatory Workshop on Classical South Indian Music for Violinists and Singers led by Janhavi Jayaprakash, 1998. Finally, he attended the International Course for Professional Choreographers and Composers in Wakefield, England, where his tutors were Nigel Osborne and Robert Cohan.


Activities

Bollen is a composer, sound designer, performance artist, DJ, VJ and musician. He was founder (in 1991) and artistic director of the Ensemble HEX. He teaches composition at the Messiaen Acadamy in Enschede. As a performer he plays the (electric) violin, bass guitar, live electronics and video with Alison Isadora in the multimedia performance duo SYNC and with the Australian percussionist Steve Heather.


Compositions

His works are often created with the help of self-written computer programs. In order to expand the sound palettes in his works he frequently chooses to incorporate tape or live sound processing. He also collaborates with choreographers, such as Scottish choreographer Ross Cooper and Daniel Belton (New Zealand). His works have been performed in Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Japan, Russia, the Ukraine, Indonesia, the USA, Australia, and New Zealand.


Prizes

Bollen was the youngest contestant and winner of Third Prize at the Oscar Back Violin Contest in 1970.
