Biography Jan Welmers

Jan Welmers was born in Zuidlaren on July 6, 1937.


Education

He studied organ at the Groningen Conservatory of Music with Wim van Beek, and at the Utrecht Conservatory of Music with Cor Kee. Later he studied composition with Kees van Baaren.


Activities

Jan Welmers was the organist of the St. Stevens Church in Nijmegen. From 1974 till 1998 he taught organ and organ improvisation at the Conservatory of Music in Utrecht.


Compositions

His organ works were performed by leading organists such as Kamiel d'Hooghe and Lien van der Vliet; the latter devoted a series of concerts to Welmers' compositions in 1991. Movements(1990) was the compulsory work at the Internationale Orgeldagen Rijnstreek (International Organ Days Rijnstreek) in 1990. Besides organ works, Welmers oeuvre consists of chamber music (Muziek voor 2 clavecimbels (Music for 2 harpsichords), Querelles (1982) for recorder and percussion, Songs for carillon (written for the 8th International Congress for Carilloneurs in 1989) and works for choir (Licht en Donker IV for choir and organ, on texts by Dag Hammarskjöld.


Prizes

In 1966 Welmers won the first prize during the National Improvisation Competition in Bolsward. In 2005 he was awarded the Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Prize for his great importance in the national and international organ world.
