Education
He studied at the Utrecht Conservatory with Stoffel van Viegen, Willem Mudde, Adriaan Schuurman and Cor Kee (organ and church choirmaster). During that time he developed a special interest in analysis of contemporary music (Ton de Leeuw and Joep Straesser).

During that time he developed a special interest in analysis of contemporary music (Ton de Leeuw and Joep Straesser). He also studied electronic music for two years at the Gaudeamus Foundation.
Jan van Amerongen gave private organ lessons and he was chorus conductor in several cities in The Netherlands. He taught music at grammar schools and for six years he was editor of the periodical Koor en Kunstleven. From 1973 to 1984 he was manager of the regional school of music in De Meern. He also gave many lectures and introductions at concerts.
Jan van Amerongen has written songs, choral music, chamber music and orchestral works. The Willem van Leusden Foundation released a compact disc with chamber music from the period 1980-1998.
