Biography Jan Masséus

Jan Masséus was born on January 28, 1913 in Rotterdam and died on February 15, 1999 in Bilthoven.

He studied at the Conservatory of Music in Rotterdam: piano with Jaap Callenbach, Phons Dusch and Iskar Aribo and composition with Willem Pijper, Henk Badings and Piet Ketting.

In 1946 he was appointed piano teacher at the Conservatory of Music in Rotterdam. From 1956-1961 he was a music critic of the daily newspapers Algemeen Dagblad and the Vrije Volk in Rotterdam. From 1961-1978 he was managing director of the Music School in Leeuwarden, and also managing director of the Federation of Music Schools in Friesland.

In 1942-1943 he wrote his first compositions, a 'Prelude' for piano (op. 1), the 'Brahms-variaties' for 2 piano's (op. 2) and the 'Schubert-variaties' for 2 piano's (op. 3). Since then he wrote numerous chamber music compositions and works for symphony orchestra, as well as pieces for amateur orchestras: brass bands, concert bands and accordion orchestras.

In 1953 he won the AVRO-composition competition with his 'Violinconcerto' op. 23. In 1956 he was awarded the Visser-Neerlandia prize for his song cycle 'Gezelle-liederen'. In 1966 he was awarded the Gouden Viooltje, a prize from the former Frysk Orkest. In 1972 he was awarded the silver medal and the diploma from the Société d'encouragement et d'éducation Arts-Sciences-Lettres from the Académie Française in Paris. In 1979 he received the title of Knight in the Royal Dutch order of Oranje Nassau.
