Biography Jacques Maassen

1947 - 2013

Jacques Maassen was born in 1947.

Maassen is the third generation of carillonists in his family: both his grandfather and father preceded him. He studied at the Nederlandse Beiaardschool in Amersfoort with Leen 't Hart and in 1972 he received the Prix d'Excellence. He also studied music science at the State University of Utrecht.

Maassen has been a member and President of the Dutch Carillon Guild. He has served as Director of the Dutch Carillon School for 20 years. He was the first Vice-President of the World Carillon Federation and served in that capacity from 1978 until 1990. In the field of musicological research, Maassen has published widely on the past and present world of the carillon and carillon music. His
writings, both articles and books are published in Dutch and English. Included in this output are his contributions to the significant work 45 Years of Carillon Art. As a teacher, Jacques Maassen is known throughout the world. In addition to teaching carillon performance, he is also a distinguished teacher of campanology, carillon literature, programming and arranging. But it is without doubt that Maassen's most significant contributions to the world of the carillon have been as a musician: improviser, performer, and composer. As a performer he was awarded the Prix d'Excellence, the highest prize for performance in the Netherlands. He won several performance prizes as a young man, and was the first Dutch carillonist to play in Japan. He was the Artist in Residence in Canberra, Australia, and has played many dedicatory recitals to inaugurate new carillons. Without doubt, however, it is as a composer that Jacques Maassen will be remembered in carillon history.
