Biography Isabelle van Keulen

Isabelle van Keulen has built an international career as a violinist and violist. She performs with leading orchestras in Europe and the United States and works with such conductors as Riccardo Chailly, Sir Collin Davis and Valery Gergiev. She also performs chamber music and has a duo with the pianist Ronald Brautigam. Van Keulen is closely involved with various (chamber) music festivals, among which the Delft Chamber Music Festival, and the Austrian Lockenhaus Festival, led by Gidon Kremer. She plays a violin made by Joseph Guarnerius del Gesu in 1734 and a viola by Peter Greiner.

1966 - 1982

Isabelle van Keulen is born on December 16 in Mijdrecht. She begins playing the violin at age 6. She studies the violin at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam and with Sándor Végh at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

1983 - 1989

At age 17, Isabelle van Keulen wins the silver medal at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in Folkstone and begins her international career. A year later, she wins the top prize at the Young Musician of the Year Competition in Geneva and she is invited on tours through Europe, the United States and Japan. Since 1985, she has worked with Gidon Kremer’s annual Lockenhaus Festival.

1990

Not only a successful violinist, Van Keulen makes her debut as a viola soloist in Hector Berlioz’s 'Harold in Italy' with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Edo de Waart.

Isabelle van Keulen records the CD 'The Violin Sonata Around 1900' with the pianist Ronald Brautigam, It is the second CD by the duo, who are acclaimed by the press and public. She records other CDs -- with music by Dimitry Shostakovich, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and others – on which she plays the violin and viola.

1996 - 2002

Isabelle van Keulen is involved in the founding of the Delft Chamber Music Festival and in 1997 becomes its artistic director. She performs with friends and colleagues such as Gidon Kremer, Michael Collins and Vadim Repin. The summer festival develops over the years into a high quality event with international allure.

2003 - 2005

Van Keulen makes her debut as a violinist/conductor with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. With Ronald Brautigam, she records several successful CDs.

2006

In the 60th-anniversary season of the London Mozart Players, Isabelle van Keulen appears as a soloist and conductor. In the summer, the ensemble performs at the BBC Proms. She resigns as artistic director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival and is replaced by Liza Ferschtman. Van Keulen is the artist-in-residence at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival.

Isabelle van Keulen is appointed artistic director of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. Her first achievement in this post is to conduct the world premiere of Bent Sørensen’s second piano concerto 'La Mattina', with Leif Ove Andsnes, Mozart’s 'Symphony No. 32', and Tchaikovsky’s 'Serenade for Strings' in the Oslo Opera House.

2010

Van Keulen and Brautigam celebrate their 20th anniversary as a duo. She returns to the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and gives chamber music master classes and recitals.

2012

Isabelle van Keulen starts a professorship at the Hochschule für Musik in Lucerne, Switzerland.
