Melodic noise trio that has become popular in a short period of time. In 2000 the band wins the Grand Prix of the Netherlands talent award.
Vocalist/guitarist Selwyn Slop meets drummer Remco Cornelissen and bassist Bart Baekelandt in the summer of 1998. The first self-composed songs are released on the self-released CD Assorted Songs.
Incense wins several regional awards, which gets them in finale of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands talent show, which they win. The band also releases the CD single See You, Saw You, Miss You, Kill You.
Incense performs at the Noorderslag festival. Following that the trio goes into the studio to start recordings for their debut album. Approx 45 Min. is released in August (Suburban Records), both on CD and LP. One day after the release of the album Incense plays the Lowlands festival. During the Grand Prix of the Netherlands talent show, former winner Incense presents the video that accompanies the song Starlet.
Incense feels very strongly about improvisation and on stage the band is backed by VJ Stalker. In March the band travels to Austin, Texas, to perform at the South By South West Festival. In April Incense travels to Germany, Belgium and Poland. When they return to the Netherlands, the band starts recordings for the follow-up to Approx 45 Min.
On Tip Of Wings We Walk comes out in February, both on CD and LP. The album contains several subdued songs that feature synthesizers, electronic piano and horns. Keyboard player Richard Plukker from Candybar Planet joins incense. But since he also has obligations elsewhere Henk Jan Heuvelink joins them. During the festival Waterpop Wateringen and De Beschaving Incense is joined on stage by horn section Musical Wind Unit. A German tour kicks off on September 19 and runs until October 4. Late November/early December the band plays with Astro5oniq in Spain.
In April Incense travels to Spain for a few gigs. Rehearsing for acoustic sets on Spanish radio and TV, the band records various 'unplugged' tracks. The track Embrace closes of Ook Leuk Om Te Horen ('Rather Nice To Listen To'), a sampler of 17 local bands from the Delft area. It appears Incense's last release, as the trio announces its (temporary) split. Drummer Remco Cornelissen and bassist Bart Baekelandt will stick together as songwriters for a new band. Singer Selwyn Slop, sound engineer Misja van der Burg (bass) and drummer Lennart Bes (Burma Shave) set up The Leaves. On July 2 Incense plays its last gig for the moment on July 2 at the Dollypop festival in Hengelo.
Burma Shave Marike Jager The Polar Exploration Ship
As of January 7 Bart Baekelandt joins Rotterdam-based band Feverdream. Selwyn Slop replaces bassist Paul Krispijn in Burma Shave.
In March, drummer Remco Cornelissen's stonerband Flying Fortress has an album out called Man-Made Noise. It's a split album with the band Sweet Assembler.
