Van Veen and pianist Erik van der Wurff form Cabaret Chantant Harlekijn.

Herman's debut album Herman Van Veen I is released.

The single Suzanne shoots to number 4 in the charts. Herman's second album comes out.

In March Van Veen gets a lifetime achievement award from AC-formatted public radio station Radio 2. In the summer he renews his contract with Universal Music, signing a new 10-year deal.
2003
Van Veen releases the French-language CD Chapeau and in June he performs in Paris. The French press is very enthusiastic about the shows and in September Van Veen performs at the Theater Dejazet on the Place de la Republique. Herman van Veen is director of The First Lady, a music theatre production, featuring Lori Spee as Jacqueline Kennedy. Spee is also featured in another music theatre production about classical composer Chopin. The book Opzij, Opzij, Opzij ('Move Over') is a collection of Van Veen's best lyrics.
2005
On March 18 Van Veen celebrates both his 60th birthday and his 40th artist anniversary in Antwerp's Sport Palace. The show features special guests Paul van Vliet, Willem Vermandere, Daniël Lohues (Skik), Kommil Foo, Karin Hougaard, Herman Finkers and Eva De Roovere & Gerry De Mol. In March he's on the bill of Amsterdam's Carré theatre for six weeks in a row. On the album Vaders ('Fathers') Van Veen is accompanied by several musicians including the ZAPP! String quartet.

In April Van Veen performs a series of try out theatre shows for his upcoming tour Onder Vier Ogen ('In Private') featuring guitarist Edith Leerkes. Van Veen is one of the vocalists at the special Toon Hermans tribute on November 27 at Hoorn-based Park Theater. It is broadcast by pubcaster AVRO on Boxing Day. Woorden Op Mijn Zang (featuring lyrics and pictures) is part one in the Private Collection series. On the accompanying CD Van Veen sings re-recorded favourites of his. The book contains song lyrics illustrated with unique private photos. The accompanying CD features Van Veen's own favourite songs re-recorded by the singer.
2007
Herman van Veen and guitarist Edith Leerkes perform with the programme Chapeau which is in the French language. The duo plays two sell out shows at the Caveau theatre in Paris. Chapeau is released on CD and DVD in September in collaboration with the Parisian record label O+. On 10 September, the exposition Herman van Veen - Der Maler (The Painter) opens in the German town of Detmold. Van Veen works on his 150th album 150ste album Nederlanders (Dutchmen), a tribute to the greatest contemporary Dutch songwriters. The album includes contributions by Daniël Lohues, Trijntje Oosterhuis and Edith Leerkes.

Herman van Veen is honoured on the occasion of his 40th anniversary as an artist with his own stamp. The stamp book contains information about Van Veen's career. Proceeds of the 25.000 books go to the Herman van Veen Foundation. Besides the stamps, there is also the publication of a book called Medemens (Fellow Man), which tells about his his experiences while travelling around the world. After the summer Herman van Veen tours the Dutch theatres. During his 400th show in theatre Carré, Van Veen becomes Companion of the Order of the Dutch Lion. In November the book De Koe Zei Boe, De Ezel Balk, Het Schaap Toen Bla is published. In the book Van Veen writes a children's version of the Christmas story. Van Veen's daughter Anne makes her theatre debut with her programme Anne.
2009
After his show on 26 May in Utrecht, Herman van Veen receives the Silver City Medal from the mayor for his exceptional cultural and humanitarian work. As of July the singer tours with Edith Leerkes again. Their show Im Augenblick (At The Moment) kicks off with a sell-out show in the German town of Seesen. As of April, Van Veen can be seen in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with the family show Een Dag In September (One Day In September), the musical fairytale of Anne, 'the girl that once amazed time'. On 28 August the book Naema: De Vrouw Van Noach (The Wife Of Noach) is published. The five CD compilation box 100, with a selection of one hundred songs from a catalogue of 3000, is released in October and sells over 25.000 copies. On 9 November the singer receives an honorary doctorate from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels). The honorary doctorate is given to people for their scientific, social or political engagement. In November the singer makes headlines when a Dutch newspaper reports about Van Veen's speech commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall in which he compares the Dutch fascist NSB movement of the 1930's and 1940's, with the undemocratic structure of the Partij voor de Vrijheid (Freedom Party, PVV) of Geert Wilders which dominates the Dutch political landscape at the moment. The singer receives many thousands of emails including several hatemails.
