Biography Herman Mulder

Herman Mulder (December 12, 1894, Amsterdam) studied singing and piano at the Amsterdam conservatorium. He had a career as concert singer and teacher.

As a composer he was an autodidact and not very successful. He wrote his first symphony - opus 28 - at the age of 46. Although 2 compositions were awarded only a few were performed. His ‘Strijkkwartet nr. 9’ received the 3rd prize at the Concours Quatuor 1956 in Liège (Belgium) and the 4th Symphony - opus 114 - received the 3rd prize at the Queen Elisabeth Concours 1961 in Brussels. This symphony and Symphony no. 7 have been recorded and broadcasted by the Dutch radio, also his Concerto for orchestra, op. 101 and the Funerailles, op. 157 (in memoriam Simon Vestdijk).

Herman Mulder died on April 28, 1989 in Amsterdam.
