Biography Henk van der Vliet

Henk van der Vliet was born in Rotterdam in 1928. Education From 1938 to 1942 he received accordion lessons at the Rotterdam Toonkunstmuziekschool. His first experimental composition was presented to the managing director of the music school, Willem Pijper, who advised him to study music: he chose the flute as his instrument.

Biography Henk van der Vliet

Henk van der Vliet was born in Rotterdam in 1928.


Education

From 1938 to 1942 he received accordion lessons at the Rotterdam Toonkunstmuziekschool. His first experimental composition was presented to the managing director of the music school, Willem Pijper, who advised him to study music: he chose the flute as his instrument. His study at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music started in 1945, where Jan van Dijk was his most influential teacher. After his graduation in 1950 he studied flute with Johan Feltkamp in Amsterdam.


Activities

Henk van der Vliet taught the flute at music schools and played in the Rotterdam Kamerorkest. In 1953, he emigrated for Canada, where he played in a military band. He returned to The Netherlands in 1956, and presumed his previous activities. In 1961 he moved to the province of Noord-Brabant, where he formed a trio with his wife (a pianist) and Jan Wisse (violoncello).


Compositions

As of 1965, Van der Vliet started composing on a regular basis. He is a self-taught composer and has written many works for amateurs. Vijf studies (1974) for orchestra were commissioned by the City of Breda, Sonatine for flute and piano and Passacaglia for piano were published in 1975. Beestenboel, for youth choir and ensemble, was a commission by the Dutch Choral Societies in 1981. The Concerto for wind band, xylophone and 2 pianos was commissioned by the Stichting ter bevordering van de Brabantse scheppende toonkunst (Foundation for the creation of music in Brabant). In 2007 conductor Mikola Sukach made a tour with his orchestra Philharmonia and peformed the Sinfonia Concertante for flute, English horn, harp and orchestra (2007), the 1ste Sinfoniëtta (in 1987 composed for the Brabants Orkest) and the Preambulum e Variationi in Chernigov (Ukrain). Recent works are a.o. Scherzo for horn trio (2005), Sonata da Chiesa for flute, oboe and organ (2000), 6 Preludes en Fuga’s for organ (2005), 3de Pianosonatine (2006) and Divertimenti (for clarinet and piano, 2006 and guitar, 2008), performed at the Dutch Ambassy in Vienna .
