Biography Hans Christian Detlefsen
1951
Hans Christian Détlefsen was born in Bredstedt, Germany, on February 22, 1951. He lives in the Netherlands since 1981.
Education
In 1969 he participated in the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, Germany, attending the classes of Karlheinz Stockhausen and György Ligeti. From 1969 to 1974 he studied piano, music education, and music theory at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg. For the next two years a Fulbright scholarship enabled him to study composition and electronic music at the California Institute of the Arts. Among his teachers were Leonard Stein and Morton Subotnick. He also studied Javanese gamelan with K.R.T. Wasitodipuro. After a period of teaching music in Hamburg he continued his gamelan studies in Amsterdam and Indonesia until 1980.
Activities
In the 1980s Détlefsen mainly worked as a composer for the theater and experimental films. Since 1995 he performs his piano music in concerts. He received a number of commissions by distinguished musicians. He also was a guest lecturer, e.g. at the conservatory of Cádiz, Spain.
Compositions
Détlefsen's oeuvre includes piano music, songs, and chamber music as well as electronic and film music. In his early works he explores the nature of sound by means of microtones (Annäherung) or electronic transformation (Shabda). At times theatrical elements play a role as in Moai terék nliydang for harp solo. From Kembar (piano solo or duo) onwards the harmonic colours of a variety of modal pitch sets alternate with each other while additive rhythms enable continuous expansions and contractions of the musical phrases.
Prizes
In 1974 he was awarded the first prize of the International Gaudeamus Composition Contest for Annäherung for 5 trombones.
