1945
Guus Hoekman (born October 16, 1913, in The Hague) is initially a ship's officer but later begins a singing career. He studies with Jaap Stroomenbergh and Aaltje Noordewier-Reddingius. Later, he also has lessons with Lothar Wallerstein. During World War II he gives clandestine lieder recitals.
1951
After the war, Hoekman begins his career as an oratorio singer in Spain and Italy. He makes his debut with the Royal Flemish Opera as Osmin in Mozart's 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail'.
1956 - 1959
Hoekman makes his opera debut in the Netherlands as the King in Carl Orff's 'Die Kluge' [The Wise Maiden]. The following year he sings the role of Baculus in Albert Lortzing's 'Der Wildschütz' [The Poacher]. In 1959, he has a role in the opera 'Kalchas' by Jurriaan Andriessen and he sings in the world premiere of Henk Badings' opera 'Martin Korda'.
1961 - 1969
Hoekman makes his debut with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. He then sings in the premiere of Guillaume Landre's 'Jean Lévecq' (1965). He returns as Osmin in a production in Boston of Mozart's 'Die Entführung aus dem Serail' with Joan Sutherland and Boris Christoff. In New York he makes a successful debut as La Roch in Richard Strauss' 'Capriccio'. In 1969 he performs at Glyndbourne as Arkel in Debussy's 'Pelléas et Mélisande'.
1972
Hoekman teaches and directs in the United States.
1980 - 1985
He has a role in De Nederlandse Opera Stichting's world premiere of Jan van Gilse's opera 'Thijl'. He subsequently plays various roles with the Opera Stichting, including Sarastro in Mozart's 'The Magic Flute' and Titurel in Wagner's 'Parsifal'. He also gives singing lessons in Amsterdam. In 1985 he performs for the last time singing Trulove in Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rake's Progress'.
1996
Guus Hoekman dies at age 82 in Utrecht on April 16.
