Biography Groep Ohm
1972
At the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg pianist Willem Kühne and bassist Niko Langenhuijsen meet. Together with drummer Pieter Henrard they form a trio which they name Groep Ohm. In 1972 René van Asten (who will later gain some fame as an actor) joins the group on percussion. In August 1973 they enter the competition of the Laren Jazz Festival, and manage to win the first prize.
1974
Groep Ohm releases its first album on their own label Syntohn: Skokian.
1975
In March the trio does a tour, with the English saxophonist Trevor Watts and tenor saxophonist Ab Baars (who takes part in Langenhuijsen's workshops) as special guests. In April Groep Ohm is awarded the Wessel Ilcken Prijs. At the award ceremony they play in a special sextet format, featuring Baars and the saxophonists Peter Cornelis (soprano) and Rob van Stratum (alto), who are also recruited from the bassist's workshop. The group continues to play in this line-up.
