Biography

Giovanca Desire Ostiana is a singer, model, presenter and actress. Her debut album Subway Silence (2008) is produced by Benny Sings and versatile hiphop and nu soul.

1977 - 2006

Giovanca Desire Ostiana (Alkmaar, 22 March 1977) grows up in Amstelveen. Her parents are Antillean and at home she hears Latin American music, eighties pop and soul from singers like Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and Minnie Riperton. As a teenager she sings in church, but not outside, because she is convinced her vocal talent cannot be combined with her favorite style of music, hiphop. After high school she starts college, but she temporarily breaks off her studies after a year and a half. Giovanca is in her early twenties when she starts working as a model, and combines this with acting. When she hears the American singer Mary J. Blige's debut album What's The 411? in 1992, she realizes that there is a place for singers in hiphop. Inspired by Mary J. Blige she starts her own career as a singer. She sings in soul singer Corey's band, and she co-writes her songs. She is also involved in Tribute2BobMarley, a side project by the Rootsriders. Giovanca works as a backing vocalist both on stage and in the studio for Izaline Calister, Jiggy Djé, Relax, Leon Ware, Terry Callier, Kindred The Family Soul, Jhelisa Anderson, Wouter Hamel and Benny Sings. Backed by producer Benny Sings she starts making plans for her first album.

2007

Her first release as a solo singer is The Mighty 8, a compilation by the Nationaal Pop Instituut (Dutch Pop Institute; 1997-2007) in its Unsigned series, released early 2007. Other singers on the CD are Dinopha, Jav'lin, Neenah, Ntjamrosie, Sabrina Starke, Senna and Sage. In the same period Giovanca graduates in Remedial Education at the University of Amsterdam. As part of the Dox Family Night the singer performs at the North Sea Jazz Festival on 14 July, together Benny Sings, Wouter Hamel, Kofi Anonymous, Dean Tippet and Roos. Late 2007 Giovanca hits the charts (#58 in the Single Top 100) with As Long As We're In Love, a duet with Wouter Hamel. She appears on national television a number of times, including the talk shows De Wereld Draait Door and Pauw & Witteman.

2008 - 2009

Giovanca's debut album Subway Silence is released by Dox Records in March 2008. Besides producer Benny Sings saxophonist Bart Suèr and singer Dean Tippet contribute to the recordings. Reviewers praise the CD. In its June issue the authoritative music magazine Oor calls the singer a 'class of her own' and talks of a 'sophisticated solo debut' in which the soul music shows 'depth of content and a perfect tone'. On My Way, the album's first single, gets her performances in the TV shows Raymann Is Laat and Goedemorgen Nederland. The singer also regularly appears as sidekick in the popular cultural TV talk show De Wereld Draait Door. Giovanca lends her voice to Princess Tiana, the main character in the Dutch version of the Walt Disney animation film The Princess and the Frog.

2010

When she guests on the talk show De Wereld Draait Door in March Giovanca is presented with a gold record for her solo debut Subway Silence. Since its release in 2008 the CD has sold over 25,000 copies. In **? her second album, While I'm Awake, is released.
