Frank of Gompel was born on December 20, 1965 in Eersel.
Musical Education
During his musicology study (specialisation 'art policy and management') at the University in Utrecht (1985-1989) he was advised by his professor Jos Kunst to study composition. From 1992 up to 1996 he studied composition and instrumentation at the Conservatory of Utrecht with Henk Alkema and Ed de Boer. Afterwards he was incidentally coached by Hans Kox.
Activities
The practice of the Japanese martial art form Aikido and Buddhism has been a large influence on his work. This expresses itself in the idea that art have a positive and healing function on society instead of acting as an aggressive or neurotic expression of the artist. 'Renewal' as a goal can be conflicting and is therefore possible impossible in determining components of the artistic spectrum of its form. Since 2000 he has been President of Utrechts Composers Collective and as from 2003 secretary of the Society of Dutch composers.
Compositions
Van Gompel has written in commission for, among others, the SNS Reaal Fund, ensembles and musicians like Ricciotti, Basho, Haydn Youth String Orchestra, Camerata Antonio Lucio and Emmy Verhey. Sacred order was selected in 1999, for the project young composers of the (former) the Dutch Ballet orchestra. He made his international debut in 2003, with The Path is the goal in a tour by United Kingdom and Scotland.
