Biography Flemming

Band from Amsterdam that started out as a Britpop band, but grew out to become an alternative guitar pop band with a preference for the experiment.

1997

Flemming is formed by students Rutger van Mourik and Jiggle. Initially, they call themselves Lemming. Only after they are joined by drummer Mark the band seems to be going places.

1998

In April Lemming releases the Search EP. The EP includes five songs which are all heavily influenced by the Britpop scene. The CD gets positive reviews and Lemming is invited as one of the first bands to play at the London Calling, a festival for UK bands in Paradiso in Amsterdam.

1999

Lemming plays the Noorderslag festival and signs to Warner Music. Then Dutch glamrock band Lemming reforms and objects to the Amsterdam-based Lemming to use the name any longer. And so Lemming becomes Flemming. The band goes into the studio with Belgian producer Tom Pintens (Zita Swoon) to start recordings for their debut album.

Lemming

2000

Flemming's untitled debut album comes out in July. The 'Belgian influences' on the album are obvious. The poppy songs are full of surprising turns. The band has been working on the structure of the songs and uses instruments like the synthesizer, sampler, strings, carillon and clarinet. The single Name? is accompanied by a much talked-about video which is set on the set of a fictitious set of a porn movie.

2001

Flemming plays the Noorderslag festival for the second time. The band also plays the major clubs and can be seen and heard on national radio and TV. In May they release a special version of the song Starry Night, which was recorded with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and Robert Kirby, the string arranger of the British singer-songwriter Nick Drake (1948-1974). For the B-side they have covered the Beatles song I'm So Tired.

2002

Warner decides not to renew Flemming's contract. Despite this the band continues with the preparations for a new album.

2003

The single Old Boys is released via Idol Media. The track is a duet between Rutger van Mourik and Dutch singer Birgit Schuurman. Again, Robert Kirby is responsible for the string arrangements. Old Boys is the first single from We Love The Industry. The album is produced by the band and is scheduled for release early 2004.

2004

Flemming We Love the Industry is self-produced. It is launched on February 2 in Amsterdam's Paradiso. Second single Wouldn't It Be Nice comes out simultaneously.

2005

Eddy Steeneken joins 2k new wave band Moke, ex-Supersub Felix Maginn's new band, while bassist Pup joins Gram, the new band of ex-Seedling singer Marg van Eenbergen, Mark is in Ninginkata, Rutger van Mourik is guitarist/songwriter of Bronco and Jiggle finishes off his final study paper.
