Biography Fanny de Ruiter

Fanny de Ruiter was born on October 2, 1984 in Dordrecht.

Musical Education
Between the age 5 and 14 she followed violin lessons and at the age of 9 piano. She participated in ten musical theater works including Orpheus in Muziekcentrum Vredenburg (2000). At the age of eleven she began a vocal study with Eugénie Ditewig and in the meantime is studying classical voice at the Conservatory of Utrecht.


Compositions

At age eleven she participated in the composition workshops by the National Composition contest for students, organised by teh LOAM.Ontsnapping aan de Schaduw for violin, clarinet and cello was selected with the other winning pieces for performance in Musis Sacrum on the occasion of the golden jubliee of the Chamber Music Society of Arnhem, printed in an anthology Donemus (1996). For the Prinses Christina Concours she composed Vocali-setje, op. 11; opus 12 is the miniopera De miskleun van Blaaskaak. She performed twice with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble in her own composition: ... de Dertiende! for thirteen loose wooden organ pipes in an commission for VPRO's Villa Achterwerk for the autumn concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam (1997), and her song het Leven is Hard for the live New Year'concert by the VPRO in the Concertgebouw (1999). Since 2000 she composes songs op poems. During the festival Horen, Zien en Schrijven (Hear, See, Write - art in action for human rights) she composed, in a commission from the Princess Christina Concours a work for mezzo-soprano, sopraan, guitar, piano and cello: Dasloze Droom, in memory of Prince Claus, is an attempt of an elegy over unanswerable life questions. onbeantwoorde levensvragen (première on 7 December 2003).


Prizes

She won various youth prizes for voice (classical and jazz) and compositie. With her artwork Spel in de wereld van het kind she won the first prize in 1994 during the Utrechtse Parade. In 1996 she won the third prize (categorie 8-13 years of age) in the national Composition contest for young composers from the Chamber Music Society of Arnhem with Ontsnapping aan de schaduw,or violin, clarinet and cello. Later she re-wrote a version for flute and received the youth prize at the Flutonicon composition concours (1997), and this was the required work at the National Flute Concours (1998). The song Making Landfall received a second prize in the final of the Princess Christina Concours for composition. (2003).
