Biography Eton Crop

Dutch band that transforms from punk pop band to dance act and also has an affiliate called E.C. Groove Society.

1979

Inspired by bands like the Fall en the Undertones Erwin Blom (vocals, guitar), Corné Bos (bass), Ron Baars (guitar), Peter Verschueren (organ) and Ed Tuyl (drums) form the band Eton Crop.

1980

First single is Timmy Barker Is A Coward. Eton Crop also releases a cassette tape with experimental punk pop.

1983

Ron Baars leaves the band and the mini album Six Silhouette Romances is released. Initially, Eton Crop is more successful abroad (the UK) than in the Netherlands. On 15 November the band cuts the first of five sessions for influential BBC Radio One DJ John Peel. The band tours the UK, Switzerland, Poland, the US, Germany and Hungary.

1984

A second John Peel session takes place on 20 November.

1985

On October 14 Eton Crop records a third Peel session.

1986

Eton Crop Guitarist Peter de Q. makes his debut with the band on It's My Dog, Maestro. Tuyl has been replaced by Seroos, a drum computer. The band is compared with UK indie bands like Mekons, Undertones, Three Johns and the Fall. On 19 November Eton Crop records a fourth John Peel session.

1987

Spike Daalder debuts on the mini album Yes Please, Bob, which was recorded in Leeds. The keyboardist replaces Peter Verschueren. Later in the year And The Underwater Music Goes On is released. The album is recorded in the Netherlands and produced by the band and producer Tony Bonner, who also worked with Three Johns. Ingmar Wijnberge, guitarist with the Golden Strings, replaces De Q.

1988

A fifth John Peel session is recorded on June 8. Three tracks that were recorded for the third Peel session in 1985 (Cocacolonization, It's My Dog, Maestro, You Won't Get Me Out In The Rain and Harry Nelson Pillsbury) are released in the Strange Fruit series The Peel Sessions.

1989

Early 1989 Bos, DJ Eddy de Clercq and Gert van Veen (Quazar) record the first Dutch house single under the name A-men Pay The Piper. The Human League cover Don't You Want Me is released as a single. De Q. replaces Wijnberge. Englishman Adrian Hackford (violin) also joins the band.

1990

Inspired by house music Eton Crop reinvents itself. In the spring Eton Crop, now a three-piece band, plays a gig in Paradiso, Amsterdam. The band makes music that combines dance beats with violins and acoustic guitars.

1991

Eton Crop releases the dance single Noisy Town.

1992

Eton Crop The single She Likes Me and the album Get Real! are released. The album contains samples from music by the Fall, the Undertones and Jello Biafra. The band forms the E.C. Groove Society in order to avoid confusion when releasing several instrumental versions of Eton Crop songs. Blom, Bos and Daalder release material as both Eton Crop and E.C. Groove Society. With Surkus and Quazar Eton Crop goes on a very successful tour of the Dutch clubs.

1993

E.C. Groove Society releases the 12" In The City Part 2.

1994

Eton Crop releases the single Everybody and E.C. Groove Society comes with the EP Wired Urban Technology.

1996

E.C. Groove Society releases the 12" records Communication Breakdown and Concrete Blackout. The trio is compared to the Chemical Brothers and Underworld and performs mostly in the dance clubs in Amsterdam.

1999

E.C. Groove Society releases the debut album Adrenaline Shots.

2000

E.C. Groove Society tours with Junkie XL and performs at the Noorderslag festival and during the Week Of Dutch Pop Music.
