In 2005 Esmée Denters (Oosterbeek, 23 November 1988) takes part in the TV talent show Popstars - The Rivals, but doesn't survive the first round. In her bedroom the singer films herself with a webcam singing along to hits by Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Goo Goo Dolls, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, Otis Redding, Justin Timberlake, Natasha Bedingfield and John Legend, as well as her own music, such as the song Anything Is Possible. She uploads the clips to the internationally popular video website YouTube.

The American music industry is curious, too. Under the guidance of the American manager Jonathan Berhane Denters crosses the ocean. She records a few songs in an American studio with A&M Records producer Billy Mann, including a song written by Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland. In July Denters signs a recording contract with Tennman Records, as the first artist on Justin Timberlake's label. A video of her version of Timberlake's hit song What Goes Around, in which she is accompanied by Justin himself on piano, is viewed three million times in the first week alone. The singer performs as support act to Timberlake during his European tour. On 16 June Denters makes her stage debut at the center spot of the Amsterdam ArenA soccer stadium, accompanied by two backing vocalists, a guitarist and a DJ. The month of June takes her to Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Antwerp, and in July she appears for five concerts at the O2 Arena in London. During the summer and fall Denters and Timberlake write song material for her first album. In between writing sessions the singer is invited to The Oprah Winfrey Show in November.
