Ernst Oosterveld was born on August 20, 1951 in Haarlem


Education

He studied flute, bassoon (with Casper de Roo), piano and composition (with Theo Loevendie and Klaas de Vries) at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. At the State University of Leiden he studied Theoretical organic chemistry with subsidiary Computer Music (with Gottfried Koenig and Paul Berg) and Philosophy of Science.


Activities

Oosterveld taught composition (orchestration, analysis) at the Rotterdam Conservatory and he was senior lecturer composition (electronic music, light and classical music) at the Conservatory in Groningen. He is a programmer of computer music software and now active with morphing (computer program midiMorph and SpectralMorph). In 2005 he founded with double bassist Quirijn Altenea the group ZEQ-ATTACK.


Compositions

In 1975 he won the first prize of the Larens Jazzpodium with his jazz ensemble Soft Ice. In the Eighties he worked with the Asko Ensemble; during that time he wrote various compositions for large ensemble and music theatre. Ernst Oosterveld composed music for orchestra (Double chords, Melomotion - 1990, rev. 2000, Exchanges for large orchestra and 4 soloists - 1980, Samen - première 2006 Residentieorkest), string orchestra (Arcolino - 1992), percussion (Rotations for 6 percussionists - 1979), large ensemble (SEQ., for double bass, music software and chamber ensemble - 2002, Transition States - 2003) and music for choir (Omgekeerd evenredig: by Abendlicht -1982). He is also composer of film music and music for television documentaries, including the animation film A Good turn Daily by Gerrit van Dijk which received the Dutch film prize (Gouden Kalf).

Compact discs
Oosterveld has released two CD's with his own jazz compositions (Frans Hals Quintet) and CompaLeh with his trio MemBrain (voice/percussion, ZETA-contrabass, laptop, synthesizers), based midiMorph patterns.
