Biography Ekseption

Symphonic rock band that was highly successful in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

1958

Ekseption Hans Alta (bass), Rein van den Broek (trumpet), Tim Griek (drums) and Huib van Kampen (guitar/saxophone) form The Jokers, a school band that plays a mixture of rhythm & blues, jazz and pop.

1967

The Jokers are now called Ekseption. Rob Kruisman (saxophone, flute, guitar, vocals) and Rick van der Linden (keyboards) join the band.

Occasional Swing Combo

1968

Ekseption enters a local jazz contest and wins a record deal with Phonogram. Tim Griek and Hans Alta are replaced by Cor Dekker (bass) and Peter de Leeuwe (drums).

The Hottletts Tony Vos

1969

The band's first single, The Fifth, based on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, reaches number three in the Dutch Top 40. The Fifth is followed by the singles Rhapsody In Blue and Air. All three songs are taken from the band's first album, Ekseption, that debuts in the Top 10 of the Dutch albums charts. In August Kruisman and original band member Van Kampen leave the band.

Carlsberg

1970

This year sees the release of two concept albums: Beggar Julia's Time Trip and Ekseption 3. Beggar Julia's Time Trip is about a woman from the Middle Ages who makes a musical time trip. The album is awarded an Edison Music Award. The single Italian Concerto becomes a hit. Ekseption 3 is based on the story of Le Petit Prince by Saint Exupéry. The single Peace Planet is a big hit.

Ginger Ale Les Baroques Steve Allet

1971

Ekseption The album 00.04 reaches number one in the album charts.

1972

Ekseption 5 is released.

1973

The frequent touring through Europe (especially Scandinavia where the band is very popular) and Israel takes its toll. Sales of the new album Trinity are disappointing.

1974

Rick van der Linden leaves the band and forms the group Trace. The first Ekseption album without Van Der Linden is called Bingo. Although the album itself fails to make a massive impact in the album charts, the single De Fietser ('The Cyclist') does well in the charts.

Hans Hollestelle Trace

1975

After the release of the album Mindmirror, which fails to make any impact, the band decides to split up.

Penney de Jager

1976

Former Ekseption members Van den Broek, Vennik, Jansen and Hans Hollestelle release a jazz-rock album under the name Spin.

Ekseption releases Ekseption '78.

Kayak

1980

German broadcasting company WDR films Van der Linden for a documentary about his life and work. On May 13 guitarist, sax player and co-founder of Ekseption Huib van Kampen dies at the age of 59.
