Education
He studied piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music with Hans Dercksen, school music with Jan Boeke and from 1969 to 1972 composition with Ton de Leeuw.

1973-1976 One of the founders and member of the Amsterdam Mime Liga (composing, making music and acting)
1978-1990 Teacher at the Academy for Expression and Communication Leeuwarden.
1994-1996 Composer and coordinator of Opera Fitzcaraldo, multimedia music theater group (singers, mime players, instrumentalists and interactive computer music)
Compositions
Dirk Dekker wrote music for choir, chamber music, electronic music and music theatre. Together with Bernard van den Boogaard, Jakob Klaassen and Jean-Pierre Plooij he wrote Diktatuur for music theatre (1970). In 1991 he wrote a chamber opera for 3 voices, violoncello and electronics De fatale ontgoocheling te Oostende, in 1992 Bericht van een autistisch kind, music theatre for soprano, choir and ensemble and in 1993 Miss for Bingo, for voice, computer and sampler. In 2004 he wrote music for the film A Fairy Tale for the Centre of Arts in Bergen.
