Biography Dimitris Andrikopoulos

Dimitris Andrikopoulos was born in Larisa (Greece) in 1971.


Education

His music career started with the study of viola and music theory for which he was awarded in 1989 the Diploma of Harmony and the Diploma of Wind-Band Orchestration. His music studies in Greece concluded in Athens in 1992 with the award of the Diploma of Viola and the Diploma of Counterpoint. His music studies as a viola player were continued in the Netherlands, particularly at the Utrecht Music Academy under the supervision of Ron Ephrat. In 1996 he was awarded the Teaching Diploma from the Utrecht Music Academy and in 1998 the Solo Diploma from the Maastricht Music Academy under the supervision of Henk Guittart. As a viola player he continued his post-graduate studies with specialization in the 20th century chamber music. These studies were concluded in 2000. He took part on many viola as well as chamber music master classes with professors like L. David, A. Reshnikovsky, V. Liberman, N. Imai, Ch. Linale and K. Hashimoto. In parallel with his viola studies in Utrecht he also studied composition with Tristan Keuris and after his sudden death he continued at the Rotterdam Academy of Music and Dance with Klaas de Vries. His composition studies were concluded in 2001 with the award of the Diploma of Composition. In June 2004 he completed his post-graduate studies electronic music composition in Rotterdam with René Uijlenhoet.


Activities

In 1996 he took part in a TV program organized by the VPRO about young composers studying and working in the Netherlands. He worked with the theatre group Walpurgis (Antwerp) in the production of Vladermaus (2001-2004), with dance studio Arabesque (Antwerp) in 2002, with dance collective DC2High with Staal for quadraphonic tape and dancers (2004) and for Ensemble Emanon (Liege) he wrote Ik for clarinet and ensemble (2004). From September 2004 he teaches Composition and Orchestration at the Academy of the Arts in Porto (Portugal). He was also selected as active participant for the Centre Acanthes in 2005 in Metz (France) and worked there with W. Rihm, P. Dusapin and A. Solbiati. Nyx for orchestra, composed for this occasion, was performed on the final concert by the Orchestre National de Lorraine and conducted by Jacques Mercier.


Compositions

One of his main interests is the interaction of different disciplines in music and mainly the combination of the acoustic and electronic world. His first attempts in that direction are Nuances of Blue (2001) for soprano, electronics and dance, Bati no portao do tempo perdido (2002) written for the Rosa Ensemble, Ariadne(2003) for soprano, cello and live electronics, EOS (2003) for piano and live electronics and Cassandra’s Tales (2004) for oboe, clarinet, bassoon and electronics.


Prizes

In 1997 he won the Extra Prize in the Dutch Church Music Competition for De Profundis for choir, percussion, piano and organ. In 2002 he was awarded the NOG Prize for Young Composers 2002 with Antiparathesis for violin and orchestra, performed by the Nederlands Ballet Orkest. In 2004 he received the Composition Price of the Rotterdam Academy of Music and Dance.
