Already at a very young age Tijs Verwest plays records at parties and in discos. From the age of nineteen he starts working as a DJ in his hometown Breda. Later on he starts working in a record store. He sends his tapes to various DJ's and clubs, but without much success. In the meantime he has become a resident DJ of discotheque Spock in Breda for three nights a week.

1998
Club Time in Amsterdam offers Tiësto the possibility of a regular DJ set one night per week. This only lasts for a month because the club cannot afford him anymore. Later this year Tiësto plays in Israel.
1999
In February DJ Tiësto is one of the big names at the Inner City party in Amsterdam. The set he plays that evening is released on CD and Tiësto appears on Dutch television. His music is also popular in the UK. Each month he plays a set at Gatecrasher club in Sheffield. Together with Ferry Corsten (system F) he records a record under the name Gouryella, which becomes a huge hit in the UK. With DJ Montana he sets up the underground techno project Space Age. In the meantime, he also releases the third album in the Magik series.

Much to the dissatisfaction van the audience, however, he is not able to pick up the award (€10.000) himself. He addresses the crowd from a large screen saying that the fact that this is the first time the award goes to a DJ has proven that dance music is finally taken seriously. In April DJ Tiësto receives a TMF Music Award in the category Best Dance National and Best DJ National. In May Tiësto plays a set at the Gelredome stadium in Arnhem. Special guests that night are Skunk Anansie singer Skin and Dinand Woesthoff from Dutch rock act Kane. On July 12 Tiësto takes part in the Berlin Love Parade for the first time in his career.
