Biography DJ Promo

DJ Promo is the DJ, producer and label owner Sebastian Hoff, of German-Danish origin, and operating from Zwaag, in the province of North Holland. He starts his career in the gabber scene but because of his urge for experiment he mixes it with industrial, EBM, drum 'n' bass and trance, thus bringing hardcore to a higher level.

1992 - 1999

DJ Promo (Sebastian Hoff, 12 April 1976) changes from hiphop and hiphouse to hard house and starts performing at small gabber parties. He organizes hardcore parties himself and comes into contact with big names from that music scene. Together with The Prophet (Dov J. Elkabas) he produces his first track in 1995, under the name Section-8: Punanny. In a remix by The Prophet the tune ends up on various compilations, including Thunderdome. It is the beginning of a huge series of releases under various names: Promo, DJ Promo, Innerdrive, Brian Acardy and Hardcore Brothers.

2000 - 2004

After a number of releases for ID&T in the Promo File series DJ Promo starts his own label The Third Movement, together with DJ X-ess (Martijn Mobron). It is aimed at innovative hardcore variations. DJ/producer Catscan (Bart Kok) also joins the label. After their first release, Running Against The Rules (2000) The Third Movement brings music by N-Vitral (Stefan Busker), Peaky Pounder (Jeffrey de Gans, also known as Da Goose), D-Passion (Rik Gieling), Osiris (Maurice Daniluk), T-Junction (Tim Paalhaar) and Hectic Fence (Mark Tensundern). In 2004 X-ess and Catscan start the Pro Artist Management label and DJ Promo continues alone with The Third Movement. He experiments more, and under the name Rude Awakening he makes industrial, experimental hardcore, techno and electro. Promo starts a booking agency and releases music by others on sub-labels like Stealth Industries (Tommy Pulse) and Industrial Movement. Highlights of the The Third Movement catalog are released on CD in the series Audio Output. In April the first of a series of mix albums by various DJs is released under the title r_AW Essential. Another series of compilations is the Demolition series. Promo performs internationally, does a tour of Australia, performs at the Rex Club in Paris and at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Some of his major Dutch appearances in the summer of 2004 are at the festivals Mysteryland (for 15,000 people) and Sensation Black (for 38,000 people). The double album Never Compromise is a collaboration with New York hardcore pioneer Lenny Dee.

2005 - 2007

In January 2005 DJ Promo performs at the Noorderslag festival, in the basement of the Groningen Oosterpoort. Hardstyle DJ Dana (Dana van Dreven) records an album at Promo's studio in Zwaag, which she releases on her own Danamite Hardstyle label, under the The Third Movement umbrella. Promo's third album The Revolutionist (2006) contains two CDs and a DVD. The album's second disc contains a more abstract sound. In a review in the newspaper NRC-Next in June the DJ/producer 'with his wealth of ideas and radical treatment of sound' is placed among the electronic avant-garde. On 24 March 2007 DJ Promo presents a new hardcore concept during the festival The Resistance Below, which he conceives and Q-Dance organizes. The festival doesn't take place at a sports hall or a stadium, but at the Heineken Music Hall for some 5000 aficionados. During the festival DJ Promo himself performs three sets.

2008 - 2010

In March 2008 the 10th edition of the compilation series Demolition is released by The Third Movement. At the initiative of Kees de Koning, Top Notch's label owner, Promo works at a number of hiphop tracks, resulting in the EP Boombox Op Duizend in 2009, on which Promo collaborates with the duo Aux Raus and the rappers Willy (The Opposites) and Sef (Flinke Namen). Material from Boombox Op Duizend can be heard during DJ Promo's set at the Lowlands festival. He is the first hardcore DJ to be invited to this festival. Promo's first hiphop album, Stijlloos, is released in the summer of 2010 and contains vocal contributions by Skinto, Sef, Lucky Fonz III and Robin Hunt.
