Cristina Deutekom is known as an opera singer with her performance of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Her repertoire also includes other Mozart roles, dramatic Verdi heroines and major bel canto roles by Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. She has performs in all of the world's great opera houses and is acclaimed for her dramatic coloratura soprano, a voice noted for its agility and range. Deutekom is praised as “the world's best Queen of the Night” and “one of the greatest Lucia di Lammermoor interpreters”. In Italy, she is known as L'usignolo olandese, the Dutch nightingale.

1931

Christine Engel is born in Amsterdam's Spaarndammer neighbourhood. Her parents, who both sing in an a cappella choir, encourage “Stientje” [Little Stine] to join a local singing club. By age 5, she is performing in children's operettas: “My attraction to theatre is about as old as my love for music”. (Korenhoff 1988, p. 14) When she is somewhat older, she accompanies her mother and father to the choir conducted by Jan Smit, from whom she receives her first music instruction. Part of this choir begins the Operakoor Spaarndam, of which Christine becomes a member. She is often given solo parts to sing.

1952

She marries Jaap Deutekom, a well-known boxer who also sings in Operakoor Spaarndam.

1955

Johan Thomas, the conductor of Operakoor Spaarndam, gives her intensive lessons for five years. Then she is accepted at the conservatory, where she studies with Coby Riemersma and Felix Hupka. She also joins the Thalia operetta society, conducted by Bram Blanken.

1963

Deutekom debuts with the Netherlands opera as Queen of the Night. She soon creates a sensation in this role in Munich, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Milan and New York, where The New York Times proclaims her the greatest Queen of the Night. On the advice of her manager, Rudi Rothenburg, she changes her first name to Cristina.

For her Mozart recording, Deutekom is awarded the Grand Prix du Disque Lyrique in France. She sings Fiordiligi in Mozart's Così fan tutte at the Teatro La Fenice and is offered a special contract under which she will sing two Italian operas per year. This assures her success in Italy. She triumphs in, among other roles, Elvira in Bellini's I Puritani and Lucia in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, which according to Il Gazettino is “the greatest test of strength for a singer who wants to master the Romantic melodrama”. (Huyskens 1979, p. 69)

Deutekom is radiant in Rossini's Armida. A headline in La Notte reads: “La Deutekom's Armida: a maximum of hair-raising virtuosity”, and the opera expert Bruno Tosi writes: “The title role is a test, an examination of the most difficult sort for a soprano. The role is chock-full of pitfalls that nowadays seem insuperable – and in everything, Deutekom proves her virtuosity”. (Huyskens 1979, p. 76)
