Biography Corry Brokken

Singer who wins the Eurovison Song Contest in 1957, she retires from showbizz in 1975 and embarks on a comeback after 20 years.

1952

Corry Brokken makes her national radio debut with the song I Apologize.

1954 - 1956

Her first single De Autoscooter-Boogie is released.

1957

With 'Net Als Toen' (literally translated as 'Just Like Then') Brokken wins the Eurovision Song Contest. The song is written by Willy van Hemert.

1958

For the second time the singer participates in the Eurovision Song Contest. With 'Heel De Wereld' ('The Whole World') she reaches the ninth place getting only only one point. She sings the song 'Weet Je Nog' ('Do You Remember') for 'Jenny', the first Dutch motion picture in colour.

1960

Milord (made famous by the French chanteuse Edith Piaff) gets Corry Brokken to the highest position of the Dutch hit parade. The story about a prostitute is being seen as offensive by some parts of Dutch audience.

1961

Corry Brokken is part of the Sleeswijk Revue performing alongside the famous Dutch revue artists Snip & Snap. The singer gets her own television show, a tradition that goes on until 1972.

Brokken gets the prestigious Edison Music Award (the Dutch equivalent of the Emmy Awards).

1968

She marries René Sleeswijk.

1971

Brokken leaves the label Phonogram and signs with EMI. The well-known Dutch TV and radio presenter Willem Duys produces her new album.

On April 3 Brokken presents the Eurovision Song Fesival. She leaves show business, divorces René Sleeswijk and starts a study in law.

1984

For broadcast company AVRO Brokken presents a radio show about people who have radically changed their lives.

1988

Corry Brokken (fully known as mr. C.M. Meyerink-Brokken) starts to work as a judge in Den Bosch, a city in the south of The Netherlands.

1994

September: a selection of songs is being released on a double CD. The release wins an Edison Music Award.

1996

Comeback with the CD 'Nooit Gedacht' ('Never Believed')

1997

'Corry Brokken Zingt' ('Corry Brokken Sings') is the title of a re-release of two albums originally released in the '70s on EMI: 'Corry Zingt Toon' (a tribute to Toon Hermans, one of Holland's most famous comedians) and 'Voor Nancy' ('For Nancy').

2000

Autobiography: 'Wat Mij Betreft: Memoires Van Corry Brokken' ('Concerning Me: Memoirs Of Corry Brokken').

2003

Corry Brokken is one of the members of the jury at the National Song Contest.

2006

Corry Brokken returns to the stage. Starting in April, she's one of the guest performers during the shows of cabaret group Purper. In August she's replaced for three months by singer Anneke Grönloh. The DVD 'Een Avondje Uit Met Corry Brokken' ('An Evening With Corry Brokken') gives a chronological overview of all the successes of Corry Brokken, starting with the Eurovision Song Contest in Frankfurt in 1957.
