Biography Combattimento Consort Amsterdam

Combattimento Consort Amsterdam consists of a core of 14 musicians and regular guest musicians who join in as needed. The soloists are often members of the group. The ensemble has a varied and often surprising repertoire of chamber pieces for various instrumental combinations but also concertos, oratorios and operas. One of its objectives is to perform unfamiliar and sometimes even unpublished compositions. This requires the group do extensive musicological study. The ensemble sets respect for historical performance practices as a priority, but the choice between new or old instruments is made according to the sound quality sought in the work. For some productions, the Combattimento Consort enlists the aid of other groups, such as Cappella Amsterdam, the the Nationale Reisopera and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. The Combattimento Consort performs in the Netherlands and abroad, for example Central Europe, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, North and South America and Japan. Jan Willem de Vriend often introduces the programmed music at the ensembles concerts and radio and television broadcasts.

1982

Twelve music students in Amsterdam form a chamber music ensemble. The violinist Jan Willem de Vriend becomes the conductor and artistic director. The ensemble has an affinity with music from 1600 to 1800, the Baroque and classical period. This close-knit group of instrumentalists (consort), which wants to join the musical battle (combattimento) and strives for energetic, creative, style-conscious and inspiring music-making, grows into an ensemble of international stature.
