Biography Chocolate Puma

Dance act from the city of Haarlem that scored a big hit in the UK dance charts in 2001 with the single I Wanna Be You.

1991 - 1999

René ter Horst (DJ Zki) and Gaston Steenkist (DJ Dobre) have been working together since 1991. They record several albums and set up the Fresh Fruit label, under the aliases of The Good Men, René et Gaston, Klatsch!, Jark Prongo and Basco. In 1995 they start Pssst Music.

René and Gaston meet up with Ivo Maissan, a 22-year-old singer/songwriter from hip hop crew Relax, and start recording with him.

After several sessions they record the song I Wanna Be U, which reaches number six in the UK charts. Chocolate Puma is one of 14 bands that have a track on the CD Tunes of the Year 2001 from the UK dance magazine MUZIK.

Ivo Maissan is moving in the direction of soul music under the name IM and performs at the Noorderslag festival. Together with René ter Horst and Gaston Steenkist he starts working on a new Chocolate Puma single, the follow-up to I Wanna Be U.

David Goncalves is the singer on the A Star Is Born single.

2005 - 2006

BBC DJ Pete Tong premiers the single Always & Forever at the Global Gathering Festival. The club hit is picked by the Positiva label that releases the track in the UK in April 2006.

On March 17 Chocolate Puma performs a DJ-set at The Spirit Of London festival in Brazil to a crowd of 20.000.

Chocolate Puma makes remixes for Dirty South (Let It Go) and Prok & Fitch (The New Wave) and contributes to the compilations House Eivissa 08 and Defected In The House: Goa 09. In October René and Gaston sign to Defected Records. The Morning Rain EP is Chocolate Puma's first release on this label. One of the shows they do this year is in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 15 November.

Bingo Players

The first remix of 2009 is for Windows, a classic house track from 1991 by Sil (or: Olav Basoski), an early track which a young René ter Horst, as DJ Zki, co-produced. New tracks (including the single Only Love Can Save Me) and remixes by Chocolate Puma can be heard during the Super You&Me Party, on 6 March in Paradiso, Amsterdam. One of their live shows is in the spring on 14 March in Sofia, Bulgaria. The single Only Love Can Save Me has vocals by Shermanology (Andy and Dorothy Sherman, son and daughter of soul singer Tony Sherman). Chocolate Puma and Hardsoul mix the double album Defected In The House: Amsterdam 09 (September), a compilation in a series by the London based label Defected which is completely dedicated to Amsterdam. The mix includes more than ten tracks by Chocolate Puma, including the club hit Disco Electrique, which stem from a collaboration with the Bingo Players (Maarten Hoogstraten and Paul Christian).
