Biography Calliope Tsoupaki

Elements of Calliope Tsoupaki’s Greek background and love for early music can be heard in her compositions, most notably in the large-scale 'St. Luke’s Passion'. The scoring of that work sets the two worlds in contrast, the Western tradition and the East European, Byzantine tradition. Melisma stands in contrast to plain melodic line. Modal music with microtonal intervals is set against equal-tempered Western chords. The dichotomy is incorporated into the icon of the Pantokrator, which depicts the two sides of Christ. Many of her compositions are written for smaller ensembles. Tsoupaki teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

1988 - 1992
