Trio from Amsterdam that plays graceful guitar pop with sixties overtones and a '90s touch.


1986

Roald van Oosten starts his career in pop music playing keyboards with Ebony Eye, a symphonic hardrock band.

1991 - 1993

In the early '90s the band Little Furry Things releases several diverse demo cassettes. Also in this band are Robert Moorman (Grumpyhead) and Jeroen Klein (Daryll-Ann).

1994

Van Oosten, drummer Marit de Loos and Sem Bakker form Caesar. Within a month the band records its first ever demo.


1995

Three more demos are recorded. In the autumn Caesar records the vinyl single Goodbye To Barruschna, which is released on the (Nothing Sucks Like) Electrolux label. The track is simultaneously released with the singles of fellow Dutch bands 13, Scram C Baby, Slide and Visions Of Johanna, in a limited edition of 400 copies.

1996

Caesar in 1996 Caesar is the first band to release an album on the Excelsior (formerly Electrolux) label. Clean is released in June and gets good reviews and enters the indie charts. The band tours with other Excelsior bands Daryll-Ann, Johan, Benjamin B. and Scram C Baby.


1997

Caesar plays Noorderslag festival and goes into the studio to record their second album No Rest For The Alonely.


1998

Caesar plays at Noorderslag, Pinkpop and Lowlands. No Rest For The Alonely has good reviews and the single Situation Complications gets lots of airplay. No Rest For The Alonely is released in Britain as No Rest For The Lonely. In May the band go on tour in Britain.


1999

The year starts with a gig at the Noorderslag festival and a nomination for an Edison music award. In September the trio goes to Chicago to record the album Leaving Sparks with producer Steve Albini who also worked with Dutch bands Gore, the Ex and Cords.

2000

Caesar's third album, Leaving Sparks, comes out in March. The album is preceded by the mini album Stellar Road. On stage Caesar is backed by guitarist/vocalist/keyboardist Marien Dorleijn (ex-Nimbus). Caesar records the track Doris Day for a tribute album for Dutch-language icons Doe Maar tribute. In June the band plays at the Pinkpop festival. Caesar records a split single with producer Steve Albini's band Shellac. The single comes with part four of the cartoon Barabaraal.

2001

Caesar is working on a new album, which is due for release in 2002. In May the band supports Stephen Malkmus on some of his European gigs.


2002

Caesar is the protagonist in the Ronen Abas and Guy Mel-directed fictive rockumentary Shooting Stars about a well-known Dutch rock band. The film was cut two years before in only 12 days. In December Marien Dorleijn leaves the band in order to focus on his own band Nimbus. However, his input can be heard on the upcoming fourth album, due for release in the new year.


2003

On its fourth, eponymously titled album - which marks its reunion with producer Frans Hagenaars - the band rocks furiously. In March Caesar plays at the South By South West (SXSW) music conference in Austin, Texas. Caesar returns to the US to play at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.


2004

Caesar In March Caesar plays a series of gigs in France. Roald van Oosten writes the soundtrack to Zoenen Of Schoppen ('Kiss Or Kick') directed Janice Pierre, which is premiered at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht in September. Drummer Marit de Loos accompanies Solex on its US tour in October.

2005

During Caesar's 'sabbatical year' singer/guitarist Roald van Oosten sets up his side project Ghost Trucker, featuring members of Alamo Race Track and Kopna Kopna. Amongst others this lot plays a session for pubcaster/web site VPRO 3voor12 at the Noorderslag festival in Groningen in January. Van Oosten also writes the music to the Janneke van Heesch-directed 10-minute movie Brommermeisjes (Moped Girls) at the 25th anniversary of the Dutch Film Festival in October. He is also responsible for the film Based On A True Story by director W. Stokman. In November Caesar plays two try-outs (in Joure and Emmeloord) in preparation of its domestic tour in January and February in support of its upcoming sampler.

2006

The compilation album Before My Band Explodes consists of B-sides, covers, demos, live recordings plus favourite album tracks.


2008

In Febraury Roald van Oosten officially announces the break-up of the band. On 3 April Caesar plays a final gig at the Melkweg in Amsterdam.
