Biography

Producers, DJ's and scratchers C-Mon & Kypski have been working together for many years when they release their instrumental hiphop album Vinyl Voodoo late 2002. The album stands out because it contains no raps so that most of the songs sound like the soundtrack of a movie.

1990 - 2001

C-Mon & Kypski meet when they are still at primary school. They share a passion for skateboarding and hiphop (Public Enemy, De La Soul, NWA) and they both mix their own tape recordings. They decide to join forces and not before long they start making beats for many hiphop groups in their hometown Utrecht. But C-Mon & Kypski want to do more with their music. They are of the opinion that the use of raps goes at the expense of the experiment. Influenced by DJ Shadow they begin making instrumental tracks based upon hiphop, beats and samples and completed with scratches. Their music becomes sort of cinematic because of this. In the meantime, Kypski has become one of the best-known Dutch scratchers. He wins the national Turntablized competition no less than four times (the last time was in 2001) and represents the Netherlands during the 1999 DMC World Finals in New York. Despite having composed music for film, theatre and commercials, C-Mon & Kypski have not yet recorded their own album. There are plans to release an EP with V2, but the recording company backs out at the last moment. The self-released 12" Junkie HC/Giants Of Jazz (Dexdexter Records) comes out.

2002

C-Mon en Kypski write the intro and the outro of the CD Homegrown, a hiphop compilation album released by the Dutch Rock and Pop Institute. In the spring Kypski is invited to do a testcase for theatre Huis aan de Werf in Utrecht. Kypski and C-Mon take up the challenge and perform their studio music live, without their computers. They are backed by Daniel Rose (bass, guitar) and Jori Collignon (keyboards). On stage C-Mon & Kypski sample instruments and records, which results in an organic mix of beats, instruments and scratches. The duo win the Festival aan de Werf Audience Award and the Holland Casino Let's Play Award. C-Mon & Kypski sign to the Supertracks label (Black Market Audio and Bastian) in August. In September the EP Vinyl Voodoo comes out, followed by an eleven-track album of the same title on 9 November.

2003

During the second weekend of January C-Mon en Kypski perform at both the Noorderslag and the Eurosonic festivals. On January Kypski 25 is special guest during Trigger Action, Une Nuit Urbaine, where he performs with Mimezine, the Aarlanderveense Fanfare, Welf Turboacoustic Percussion, the Royal Wind Music, a VJ and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in music centre Vredenburg in Utrecht. On February 21 C-Mon & Kypski perform at a benefit show against the war in Iraq.

2004

C-Mon & Kypski The solo album C-Mon Cereal features C-Mon 's remixes of Senna, Raymzter, Benny Sings, Pete Philly, Opgezwolle and The Proov. Shortly after this release Static Traveller, the second group effort, comes out. Guitarist Daniel Rose and keyboardist Jori Collignon are featured more prominently than before. In the ingenious video Shitty Bum actor Olivier Tuinier is under the attack of animations. The video is downloaded from the duo's website over 240.000 times.

The CD Feel1Vibe Mixtape contains the favourite tracks out of the filing cabinet of C-Mon & Kypski. Next to own material, it features tracks by DJ Format, The Herbaliser, Pete Philly & Perquisite and Foreign Exchange. In September C-Mon & Kypski are invited for a showcase at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York. Unlike their full band show at SXSW, this time they appear in their original duo line-up. In 2005 the band is also featured on an international TV ad for Coca Cola. In conjunction with Fonos.nl Supertracks Records releases the double CD Dutch Rare Groove in October. Disc 1 consists of forgotten funk breaks from Holland by the Houseband, Rogier van Otterloo and the Dutch Rhythm Steel & Show Band.
