Biography Bettie Serveert
Indie band that achieves fame in England, the United States and Japan with melodic and sometimes heavy guitar pop.
1991
Bettie Serveert, named after Dutch tennis legend Betty Stöve, is formed. All four members of Bettie Serveert had already a history together in a band called De Artsen ('The Doctors'). This band from the city of Arnhem debuts in 1989 with the album Conny Waves With A Shell. After the release of Out Of Sack, a compilation of primitively recorded outtakes, the band breaks up.
1992
Bettie Serveert records a successful first demo. The group signs to the Dutch label Brinkman (for the Benelux countries) and Guernica, 4AD sub label. In May the Bettie song Brain Tag is released on a compilation album called Groeten uit Arnhem ('Greetings From Arnhem'). In the summer the band plays at the New Music Seminar in New York. In September the single Tom Boy is released. The band's critically acclaimed full-length debut Palomine is released in November and is immediately followed by a tour of Europe and North America.
1993
The album's title track is released as a single. In June Bettie Serveert plays at Pinkpop and signs a record deal in the States with Matador, a sublabel of major Atlantic. The group is also supporting act for bands like Buffalo Tom, Come and Superchunk.
1994
Bettie Serveert receives the BV Popprijs ('Pop Award'). Some bandmembers contribute to new albums of Julia P. Hersheimer and US band Flophouse. The group plays at most of the summer festivals (Lowlands, Halfway and Roskilde in Denmark) and embarks on a successful club tour of the Netherlands.
1995
The album Lamprey was produced in assistance of producer Daniel Lanois and recorded in the Netherlands, the US and the UK, is released in 1995. The album is preceded by the single Crutches. In March the single Ray Rain is released. When Herman Bunskoeke gets seriously ill the band is forced to postpone a tour of the UK and the US. In the spring the band goes on a headline tour of the United States. Berend Dubbe's idol Burt Bacharach has offered to write a song with the band. They have to decline an offer from Pearl Jam to be their support act. Visser and Dubbe present MTV's 120 Minutes and the band appears in Late Night With Conan O'Brien for the second time. In the summer the band goes to Japan.
1996
Bettie Serveert records a new album with Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Lemonheads).
1997
In January the single Co-coward is released, followed in February by the limited edition vinyl-single, For All The Other Fish. In March the band's new album Dust Bunnies comes out and following that Bettie goes on a successful tour of The Netherlands, Germany and the US. The new single Rudder is set for release in April. In the Autumn Bettie takes part in the Marlboro Flashback Tour playing songs by Velvet Underground.
1998
In June Bettie Serveert Plays Venus In Furs is released. Shortly afterwards Berend Dubbe leaves the band due to musical disagreements. Dubbe is replaced by Reinier Veldman, formerly of De Artsen.
1999
The new line-up of Bettie Serveert supports Paul Weller on his Dutch shows. Due to problems with Matador, the band's US label, the CD-single Our New Demo is self-released. In the meantime Berend Lubbe releases a solo album under the name Bauer. The album is titled On The Move.
2000
Bettie Serveert records the album Private Suit, which is produced by John Parish. The album is released in the Netherlands on Play It Again Sam and in the US on Hidden Agenda, a Parasol sublabel. Bettie plays at the Lowlands festival and tours the US as supporting act for Live and The Counting Crows.
2001
Carol van Dijk can be heard on the track Yawning by Dutch band 16Down with the words 'Please, David, would you mind, go back to sleep'. In July Bettie Serveert announces to take a year off. All band members occupy themselves with various solo projects: Singer Carl van Dijk and Pascal Deweze (formerly of Belgian band Metal Molly) form the country duo called Chitlin' Fooks. Their untitled debut contains covers of songs by people like Jimmie Rodgers and Gram Parsons. Drummer Reinier Veldman plays with his band Young Pilots and Peter Visser is guest musician in the band of fellow Dutch artist Ellen ten Damme.
2002
In May Bettie Serveert records a seven-track demo. In September the band goes into the studio to start sessions for new album Log 22, the follow-up to Private Suit. Drummer Reinier Veldman then decides to leave the band so he can concentrate on his own band Young Pilots. The second Chitlin' Fooks album is called Did It Again. The highly varied new album Log 22 comes out as a limited edition double LP in December via Waaghals Records. The first CD-single is released on Palomine Records/Pias. The CD version of the album follows early February, first in the US and Canada and later in the Benelux countries and Spain. In March and April the band will be touring the US, followed by a tour of the Netherlands and Belgium.
2003
Carol van Dijk and Belgian musicians Pascal Deweze (Sukilove) and Mauro Pawlowski (ex-Evil Superstars) tour Belgium as Shadowgraphic City. The trio releases a limited edition CD which is sold at the concerts. In March Bettie Serveert leaves for the States for an extensive tour, which starts New York and ends in Atlanta on 19 April. The album LOG 22 is released in the US via Hidden Agenda/Parasol Records. One week later the album is also released in the Netherlands. First single to come off the album is Smack. Late summer the band returns to the US. In october the band plays at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York (22-26 October).
2004
In March Bettie Serveert plays at the South By South West festival in Austin Texas, followed by the 20th US tour in its history. Back home the band continues recording and rehearsing for its upcoming new album. The album Attagirl comes out in October. Dreamanics, the first song on the album is also the first single. Last song on the album is the Bright Eyes cover Lover I Don't Have To Love. On October 7 Bettie Serveert and Voicst play at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels during the Amsterdam Calling festival.
2005
In February Minty Fresh releases Attagirl in the US and Canada. The US version contains as bonus tracks acoustic versions of Dreamaniacs and the title track. From February 8 - March 10 the band is touring Northern America, hitting towns like Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, Nashville, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Arlington. Back in Holland they embark on a small acoustic club tour dubbed Bare Stripped Naked
2006
Bettie Serveert celebrates its 15th anniversary. In August the semi-acoustic CD/DVD Bare Stripped Naked is released. The band kicks off a tour late 2006/early 2007. The album includes twelve tracks and features a more jazzy sound. The DVD includes a concert filmed in Brussels, two sound check songs, and material filmed during the band's US tour and recordings in the Heartland Studios.
2007
In the summer Bettie Serveert goes into the studio to record new songs. Several of these songs can be heard live when the band goes on a theatre tour.
2009
Bettie Serveert and producer Zlaya Hadzic go into the studio to record a new album. Without drummer Gino Geudens, who is busy with being a father and working a daytime job. He's replaced by Joppe Molenaar from Voicst.
