Biography Benjamin Ashkenazy

Benjamin Ashkenazy was born on March 28, 1940 in Sofia (Bulgaria). In 1948 he immigrated with his family to Israel.

Musical education
He studied composition (with J. Sadai), conducting, piano and clarinet at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem and the Tel Aviv University. He went to Europe to study with the conductors Sergio Celebidache, Franco Ferrara and Roberto Benzi. In 1973 he settled in The Netherlands and studied composition with Peter Schat and conducting with Louis Stotijn at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.


Activities

He has conducted many orchestras in Italy, Israƫl, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and France. In The Netherlands he established and conducted his own chamber orchestra. He is the musical advisor and guest conductor of the Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra (Bulgaria) and the Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra Cluj-Napocca (Romania). Presently he teaches composition, theory and conducting at the Schumann Academy of Music in The Hague.


Compositions

Many of his compositions have been written in commission. He has composed a large number of orchestral works in addition to chamber music and film music.


Prizes

He received the first prize at the International Competition of Conductors in Bordeaux.


Publications

He wrote The Systematical Proces in Solfege and Harmony (publ. The Hague).
