Astrid Kruisselbrink was born on February 9, 1972 in Velsen.


Education

Before she applied at the Rotterdam Conservatory in 1993, she played (classical and jazz) piano from the age of nine. Later she also played the saxophone and had a short career in a wave-rock-popgroup as keyboard and saxophone player and composer. In 1999 she graduated with the prize for composition. Her teachers were Klaas de Vries (composition), Peter-Jan Wagemans (analysis, instrumentation) and René Uijlenhoet (electronic music). She attended composition workshops and took lessons from several composers (Peter Michael Hamel, Paul Patterson, Alejandro Rossi, Ivan Fidele, Betsy Jolas and Brian Ferneyhough).


Compositions

Spin (1998) for soprano and ensemble was performed during the Gaudeamus Music Week 1998 by Ingrid Kapelle and the Doelen Ensemble conducted by Arie van Beek. In was performed by the Dutch Ballet Orchestra (1999) conducted by Richard Dufallo during the project Jonge Componisten (Young Composers). Kruisselbrink also wrote music for theatre and an opera for children Fietsen (Bycicling), produced by ‘Het Paleis’ in Antwerp (1999). After her studies she received commissions to write for several ensembles, choir and for orchestra: String Quartet (2000) (Doelenkwartet), Schuim (2000) for 2 piano’s and soprano (Duo Post & Mulder, Jenny Haisma), Psalm-sampl (2001) for choir, organ and harp (Venus Koor Utrecht, cond. by Peter Dijkstra), Knot (2001) for ensemble and 2 soprano’s (Charlotte Riedijk, Gerrie de Vries, Schönberg Ensemble, cond. Reinbert de Leeuw), Mond (2001) for ensemble (Gelders Orkest, cond. Henk Guittart), Dharmen (2002) for wind instruments (Doelen Ensemble, cond. Arie van Beek), O, Voël! (2002) for choir and 2 baritones (Jeroen Manders, Bas Kuilenburg, Nederlands Studenten Kamerkoor cond. Maria van Nieukerken), Sinne (2002) for wind quintet (wind quintet from the Bayern State Opera in Munich), Pra for orchestra and soprano (Gelders Orkest, cond. Hans Leenders and Monique Krüs). Fumel flow was chosen for the Alphons Diepenbrock Concours in May 2000.


Prizes

During her studies (1997) she received a first prize in the European Women Composers Contest with Zijn lippen zijn uw lippen (His lips are your lips) for choir, which was performed by the Hollands Vocaal Ensemble, conducted by Cees Rotteveel.
