Biography Andries van Rossem

Andries van Rossem was born on December 20, 1957 in Leerdam.


Education

He studied organ with Johan van Dommele at Arnhem Conservatorium and composition at the Rotterdam Conservatorium with Klaas de Vries and Peter Jan Wagemans. In 1990 he received a government grant to study with Franco Donatoni in Milano. He also followed summer courses with Morton Feldman, among others.


Activities

Van Rossem teaches contemporary music at the Academy of Arts in Arnhem. In 1992/1993 he was there as 'composer in residence' the central figure of many concerts and workshops. Since 1998 Van Rossem is one of the artistic managers of the music theatre company De Plaats.


Compositions

His work has been performed by the Nederlands Ballet Orkest, the Radio Kamer Orkest, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, the Asko Ensemble, conducted by Ed Spanjaard, Richard Dufallo, Lev Markiz, Jacques van Steen, Lucas Vis, Peter Eötvös and others. The four-part cycle Pier & ocean was inspired by a painting of Piet Mondrian. Part III (1989) was written on the occasion of the centennial of the Gelders Orkest. He also received many commissions from Dutch ensembles (the Nieuw Ensemble - Walthamstow, the Delta Ensemble - Untitled composition, Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam - Strings & harpsichord, Ensemble De Ereprijs - Piano, percussion, guitars & winds, the Oktopus Ensemble - Pier & ocean, and several international ensembles, such as Ensemble Recherche (Freiburg), the Composers Ensemble (London), Ensemble Nuove Sincronie (Milano), Caput Ensemble (Iceland), the Talking Drums (New York) and the Kronos Quartet (San Francisco). His compositions have been performed during the Nederlandse Muziekdagen 1994 and 1996, the Holland Festival 1996 and the Warsaw Autumn Festival 2000.


Prizes

In 1987, in completion of his studies, Van Rossem received the Composition Prize. In 1988 he was awarded the Aanmoedigingsprijs (Incentive Prize) for music of the Amsterdam Art Fund.
