Biography Ali B

Ali B is a Dutch rapper from Moroccan descent. He combines stand-up comedy with Dutch hiphop and is not only popular with Dutch youths but also welcome guest at various radio and TV shows.

1981 - 2001

Ali Bouali is born in Zaanstad, not far from Amsterdam. When Ali is two he and his family move to the capitol. Ali first comes into contact with Dutch hiphop when he hears the song Moordenaar ('Murderer') by Osdorp Posse. He starts making his own raps. When Ali is fourteen he and his mother and brother move to a town called Almere. After graduating he develops a gambling addiction. But after several odd jobs he brings discipline back into his life and he gives up smoking and alcohol. He also starts working on his musical career by winning the 2000-2001 Poetry Slam.

2002

Dressed in a tracksuit and a baseball cap Ali B reaches the finals of the talent contest Wanted. He also reaches the finals of the Grand Prix Of The Netherlands Talent Show in the category hiphop/r&b. He becomes second behind singer and good friend Corey.

2003

Ali B signs to Warner Music. The proceeds of Waar Gaat Dit Heen? ('Where Does This Lead To?'), which he records with singer Karima (ex-Dignity), go to Amnesty International. The song enters the video charts of music channel The Box at number two. Ali B makes a guest appearance at a RZA (Wu-Tang Clan) show and plays various other shows. He can also be seen on TV and in the daily newspapers.

2004

Ali B's third single Geweigerd.nl ('Denied.nl') refers to the fact that many Moroccan youths are denied entrance to Dutch clubs. The song is included on the album Ali B Vertelt Het Leven Van De Straat ('Ali B Tells About Life On The Street') on which artists like Brainpower, Karima, Cilvaringz, Casablanca Connect, MC Sranang and his cousin Yes-R, guest star. In April Ali B and various other artists of Moroccan descent record the song Life which is dedicated to the victims of the earthquake in Al Hoceima in Morocco. In May the rapper leaves for Tanzania to perform at the B-Connected festival. In September he kicks off a Dutch theatre tour. The song Wat Zou Je Doen ('What Would You Do?') which Ali B and Marco Borsato sang during one of Borsato's shows in June enters the charts at number one in September. The single Ik Ben Je Zat ('I've Had It With You') is a duet with singer Brace. A wax model of Ali B can be seen at Madame Tussaud's in Amsterdam. Ali B also wins the Megaward 2004.

2005

Ali B contributes to Als Je Iets Kan Doen ('If There Is Something You Can Do'), a charity single for the victims of the Tsunami disaster in Asia. Ali B also wins the Dutch Popprijs ('Pop Prize') 2004'. Ali B proves that you don't need a record company in order to be successful. He also receives a Zilveren Harp ('Silver Harp') award 2004. Single Leipe Mocro Flavour contains guest contributions by Yes-R and singer Brace. For Plan Nederland Ali B makes the seven-part TV series Rap Around The World for which he visits several developing countries as to show how young people there live their lives. Ali B's voice can be heard in the Dutch version of the animated film Robots. In April, the rapper wins a TMF Award in the category Best New Artist National. On 5 May Ali B is freedom ambassador and as such he flies by helicopter to several Freedom festivals in the Netherlands. Single Leipe Mocro Flavour reaches second place in the Dutch Top 40. Ali B. is added to the line-up of the Parkpop festival in The Hague. Together with his cousin Yes-R Ali B begins his own radio show on Juize.FM. In September Ali B and singer Brace win two Dutch Mobo Awards. The duo gets the awards for best video (Hartendief) and best single national (Leipe Mocro Flavour). MOBO (Music of Black Origin) awards honour the best national en international urban artist each year.

2006

US rapper Akon, Ali B and Yes-R record the single Ghetto. The orginal track comes from Akon's album Trouble. In the new version, recorded exclusively for the Dutch market, Ali B and Yes-R rap a verse in the Dutch language. The single Rampeneren is a collaboration with Yes-R and Partysquad. Wij Houden Van Oranje ('We Love Orange'), the football song by singer André Hazes from 1988, is released in a new version with the verses done by Ali B. The first copy of the single is presented to Ali B by Johan Cruijff at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. On the single Zomervibe ('Summervibe') we can hear Ali B sing for the first time in the chorus. The song is released as a legal download in July. The album Petje Af (Hat's Off) refers to Ali B's new image without his cap. The album features party songs as well as more serious tracks with message. Guest musicians on the album are: his cousin Yes-R, Akon, Lady D, Ton Dijkman, Lieke van Lexmond, Tim, Ziggi, Gio, Re-B, Mi-jezz, Kayaman, Qbah, Brace, J-rock, Big 2 (from the The Opposites) and The Partysquad. On 13 October Ali B wins a TMF Award in the category Best Urban Act. The single Ik En Ali B ('And I am Ali B') by rapper Riza is a real tribute. Ali B and Yes-R can be seen in the video of the song. The Leipe Bauer Flavour, recorded with fellow rapper Lange Frans and singer Frans Bauer, reaches second place in the list of the most downloaded singles of 2006, according to website www.download.nl.

2007

Ali B is nominated for the E. du Perron award, an initiative of the University of Tilburg and Tilburg city council. With the single Dit Gaat Fout ('This Is Going Wrong'), recorded with singer Gio (Giovanni Jap-Ngie), Ali B wants to make young people aware of climate change and what they can do about it. Together with Palestinian and Israeli rappers he gives two shows in the Middle-East in April. In a Palestinian refugee camp near Bethlehem he performs with Palestinian rap group D.A.M. In the city Sakhnin, in the north of Israel, Ali B and fellow Dutch rapper Darryll perform with D.A.M. and Israelian rapper Sagol59. On 15 April Ali B receives a 3FM Award in the category best r&b/hiphop artist. The single Je Weet Zelluf ('You Know Yourself') features The Opposites. The Petje Af show on 15 June features the Plan Nederland campaign 'Stop violence against children worldwide'. Ali B is joined on stage this day by Yes-R, The Partysquad, The Opposites, Ziggi, Gio, Darryl and Karima. On 7 July, Ali B is one of the acts performing during Live Earth at the Westerpark in Amsterdam. The festival focuses on climate change and is broadcast live on Dutch national radio and TV. On 3 October, Ali B is part of the Friends For War Child concert at the Ahoy' in Rotterdam. Ali B's new single Groupie Love (October) contains contributions by Yes-R, Gio, Darryl and DJ Switch. The video for this song is recorded a circus tent.

2008

In Ali B In Da House the rapper performs at the home of fans. Starting April Ali B presents a TV show called The Flat. In a studio converted to an apartment he receives various people (both famous and non) with whom he discusses current affairs.

2009

Starting 17 January the orchestra Holland Symfonia tours the country with Ali B as rapper and presenter in the role of the rebellious and curious Alibaba. Ali B is ambassador of Via Del Mondo, a children's event organized by the multicultural organization Mundial. He travels to Colombia where he visits various projects of Plan Nederland. The trip is filmed by students and footage is used in Ali B's new video Colombia (featuring Brownie Dutch). In the summer Ali B prepares for his new theatre tour which kicks off in October. In the same period he starts work on material for a new album with producer Brownie Dutch. One of the first songs of these sessions is Met Me Rollen ('Roll With Me'). In his theatre show Wie Ali Zegt Moet B ('Who Says Ali Needs To Say B') Ali B speaks of his success and he links rapper Tupac Shakur with composer Johann Sebastian Bach, The Godfather with spiritual writer Deepak Chopra and the Moroccan Rif mountains with Monte Carlo.
