Biography About

About is sample musician Rutger Hoedemaekers's one man project. Live he is joined by Marg van Eenbergen.

1999 - 2004

At the age of twelve Rutger Hoedemaekers discovers you can make music using an Amiga game computer and quits playing his trumpet. He makes techno using the stage name Rutger Hood, releases his own records and makes remixes for others, including the EP Composition With Wood III (The Remixes) by Loona (Jurgen Smith). The same EP also features a remix by Laidback Luke. One of Rutger Hood's demos is spotted by the music magazines FRET and Opscene in 1999. Hoedemaekers studies sonology at the conservatory, but doesn't graduate. Inspired by Max Tundra and Jamie Lidell he starts combining pop songs with playful, idiosyncratic electronics, using the stage name About. Some reviewers describe his music as 'The Beach Boys meets Aphex Twin'. The sound is related to duo zea, also from Amsterdam and friends of Hoedemaekers. About sends a demo to the American producer Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Donna Summer) in New Jersey. Forrest plays the demo regularly in his radio program and uses one track for a benefit compilation for the radio station. About makes remixes for bands he is friends with, including Voicst, with whom he occasionally performs live, both on and off stage, on keyboards.

About About works on a first album for Cock Rock Disco, Jason Forrest's label. It takes him three years to record it and fine-tune it in his home studio, partly hindered by a pneumothorax. In order to perform the music live About collaborates with singer/guitarist Marg van Eenbergen (GRAM, ex-Seedling). The duo's first concerts are received enthusiastically. After their debut performance at the Amsterdam OCCII in April About is featured at the Motel Mozaïque festival in Rotterdam and the ZXZW Festival in Tilburg (September). The first concert abroad is at the Ghent Vooruit on 11 November.

About In January About makes a deep impression at the Groningen Noorderslag festival. The debut album Bongo is released internationally and gets positive reviews all over the world. The live concerts aren't restricted to the Netherlands, either. In February the duo perform in Berlin twice, followed by performances in Hamburg, Leipzig, Katowice (Poland), Düdingen (Switzerland; at the Kibli Festival), Reading (England; at the Glade Festival) and Brussels (Recyclart Festival) later that year. About are on the bill of the Rotterdam Metropolis festival in July, and in August they can be seen at Lowlands, during a so-called 'silent disco'. In October and November they are on tour in the States, starting in Chicago and ending at the New York CMJ Festival.

About In the spring About records with the band Voicst, whom he has befriended. He travels with Voicst to New York to record the album. In the same month About performs at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. In Berlin the producer starts recording his second album, which is less experimental and more pop oriented. In September About gives a showcase during The New Sound Of The Dutch Underground at the Berlin Popkomm.

About tours with Voicst and performs with this band at Noorderslag, the Europavox Festival in France, the DK-Spot Festival in Denmark, Pinkpop, Sziget in Budapest and at the Rotterdam Kuip stadium as support for Kane. At the June festival Mundial About collaborates with the New York string quartet Ethel on their project TruckStop TM. During the performances on 14 and 15 June he records their string parts and processes them live on his laptop.

As a producer About leaves his mark on A Family Like Ours, the third, more poppy album by singer-songwriter Lucky Fonz III.
